The Pros: The car drives smooth and handles well. The blue & red interior lighting scheme makes you feel as if youre in a spaceship. The Cons: The interior moonroof liner broke the day after I got the car. The driver door window fell into the door. The whole window cranking mechanism had to be replaced. The plastic glove door & the center console broke off. The moonroof leaks. The a/c doesnt work at all. And there is a mysterious problem with the cat. converter & sensors. Replaced all and STILL getting the check eng. light. Diagnostics keep saying its a random code, no real problem. Right. TRY to pass inspection with the light on. Not in NY baby! Now I have frost on inside windshield.

The VW Jetta is a great car! I am the original owner and have 158,000 miles on my car. The engine is unbelievable. I average 31 mpg on the highway. My car has its original clutch! It just keeps on ticking, like a Timex! The only major problem was a tensioner on the timing chain had to be replaced at 80,000 miles! I have had only had two tune-ups! The leather seats still look brand new!

I rate my Jetta excellent, Ive had no problems with this car. My dealership has been wonderful, within the second year the oxygen sensors did fail in the car and they were replaced under warranty. When the part was recalled after I was off waranty the manufacturer notified me, and the dealer again replaced the parts even though I had no problems after the original failure. The car is fun and easy to drive (I highly recommend the manual transmission) and has great fuel economy. My only complaint would be rear passenger space, but then Im not in the back seat!

I have a 2000 Jrtta that I bought new as a company car. I bought it from my company after. I now have 268,000 miles on it. It has the 2.0 gas engine, 5spd manual trans. I only have had a few issues with the car. I regulary change the timing belt, and water pump and tune up parts as you should. The only other parts that I have replaced is the Coil Pack. That I replaced myself and was very simple. I would recomend buying a NON Turbo Jetta to anyone. They are very dependable and with care and yes some maint. it will go forever. My Daughter took the car out of state to college and she loves that it gets 28mpg. Its been a great car and my daughter loves all the options that it has.

  • Stylish Small Car - 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought my Jetta used with 54,000 miles on it and I now have 72,000. It burns a little oil, but that isnt a big deal to me. It has proven reliable, I havent had any electrical issues. Its gas mileage has been around 26 in town and up to 37 on highway 5 in CA. I love this car. I think most of the people complaining about it expected a bargain Mercedes, which this car is not. It is, however, a excellent small car alternative if you are tired of the vanilla vehicles coming out of Japan. Reliability-wise I had more problems with my 1997 Mazda 626 (3 O2 sensors). My one breakdown was mechanic related (non dealership)... He didnt tighten plug #3 and it exploded into the cylinder. I replaced the plugs, and it runs like a champ!

Ilove this car. I have had to have the syncronizer replaced and the O2 sensor but what ever the warranty covered it.

  • Major Disaster - 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

For those looking to purchase this car, take every problem listed seriously. I encountered every single problem listed in other reviews. My car has had a bad coolant sensor, a windsheild crack, bad coil pack, one of the pistons went out, problems with the brakes and brake light, a bad oxgyen sensor, the check engine light went on, the glove compartment broke, and the cupholders broke as well. VW customer service stniks and they dont even know how to fix their own cars. I am never buying a Jetta again!

I bought my Jetta from my sister and thought I was getting a great car, boy was I wrong! I should have known when she had to have the engine replaced when it was brand new! Since I have had it I have had pretty much every problem you read about: windows falling into the doors, the A/C broke twice (2 years in a row!), thermostat replaced, trunk latch is broken, too expensive to fix and the check engine light has been on for so long I forgot what it is like for it to not be on! What a piece of junk and to top it off every Volkswagon dealership I have dealt with has been a nightmare! I cant believe they can sleep at night knowing what terrible cars they sell! I will never buy VW again!

Do you like to Visit the Mechanic and spend lots of $$ for repairs, then I have the car for you. I couldnt pass its first Emmissions Test, due to some electronic failure. The water temp gauge broke--another bad sensor. The the check Engine light comes on twice in 5000 miles. EAch time requiring a $90 diagnostic.
