This Year's Model Updates:

In an effort to mold its image into that of a serious first-rate automobile manufacturer, Hyundai has recently added standard equipment and enhanced the performance of several of its cars. The redesigned Accent and new Sonata are proving that this South Korean automaker has finally learned how to build a good car. The current Elantra provides even more proof, and the company offers an industry-leading warranty program to back it up.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features.
Cons:
  • The price on this "inexpensive" Korean car keeps going up.

  • The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - 2000 Hyundai Elantra

I reviewed this car right after i bought it when i was in love with it. After a year and a half of ownership, i have realized the good and bad of this car. Replaced alternator, transmission at around 56,000 miles. Constant power window problems. Have had engine light issues for the last 5 months. My car was a flood car, but that doesnt explain issues like interior door handles snapping without warning. Bottom line: If you only have 13,000 to spend, Elantra is a good choice. If you can afford better, definitely get something else. I intend on moving up to a Camry or Accord soon.

Has been an excellent vehicle for us. We spent two summers traveling, 8500 and 11500 miles respectively. Very, very comfortable for its size. Gas mileage is generally in the 28-33 mpg range. As a spunky engine which if pushed on starts will drop mpg to 25. Have run Mobil 1 which has kept wear to a minimum apparently, since doesnt require addl. oil between 3500-4000 changes. No maintence beyond standard belts, transmission oil changes every 30,000, tires and battery change.

Purchased as Program Car with 25000 miles. Has been run both in city and hwy regularly. No problems with it at all. Just normal maintenance of oil changes, tires etc. Has over 100000 miles now and no sign of any problems. Gets good gas milage and great commuter car. Handles well in traffic. Highly pleased with price vs value.

I have owned this car for 5 years now and have no complaints about it. Obviously its not a sports car and should be driven as such. Its great for normal everyday commute and use. We drove it New York twoce in three years with no problems at all. The interior and exterior are holding up better than i expected and I have never had to use the warranty. Normal service and TLC does it. Very reliable, very down to earth, and extremely easy on the pocket.

... was a little nervous buying one. I bought this car 11 mos. ago w/72000 miles on it. It now has 83000. I have had to replace front brakes/rotors, Tires, and Battery. I do a lot of up and down hill climbing and wanted to start with new rotors and brakes, Tires I nknew about when I bought it, and the Battery was originaland 5 yrs old. All regular maintenance in my opinion. I am 62" and 260lbs, and feel comfortable behind the wheel.

Got this last year for commuting. Holds me and the kids just fine, 32mpg hwy, 27 around town. Its fun having a moonroof. Not much getup and go, but at my age, it gotup and went.....so this is a good cheap commuter car. Dont drive it like you stole it, it isnt a sports car.

I have had this car for 5 years and its still running great. I have driven it from AZ to CO twice and have not had a problem with it. I use it as a commuter car now because it is soo great on gas.

  • Great car for the money - 2000 Hyundai Elantra

Excellent experience both in city driving and nine round trips Ohio to Florida and one Ohio to Colorado. Car gets good gas mileage, uses no oil between changes, shifts smoothly (5speed), has good vision, gets good tire wear, handles well at both low and high speeds, stops straight, provides excellent driver comfort with lumbar support seat. Still have original brakes at 55000 miles, orginal exhaust system after five Ohio winters (salt, ice, snow, slush), original batter, and no rust at all. The car has been totally reliable. It has never had a operational problem.
