This Year's Model Updates:

In an effort to mold its image into that of a serious first-rate automobile manufacturer, Hyundai has recently added standard equipment and enhanced the performance of several of its cars. The redesigned Accent and new Sonata are proving that this South Korean automaker has finally learned how to build a good car. The current Elantra provides even more proof, and the company offers an industry-leading warranty program to back it up.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features.
Cons:
  • The price on this "inexpensive" Korean car keeps going up.

  • I Am Up And Down With My Car, But I Love It! - 2000 Hyundai Elantra

I actually have an automatic. I bought this car completely on a whim, one because I was pressured to, and two, because it would have been my first car and I had recently got my license. The car ran great during the first year I had it, then I started noticing some transmission issues, but they are an easy but costly fix. I only had to replace the spark plugs and wires. I bought the car at 126k miles, and I now have 144k on it and it still runs like a charm. Both windows in the back have a shot motor, and the interior isnt the best, but I have driven this car everywhere and it still does me good.

  • Falling apart - 2000 Hyundai Elantra

I bought this car used in 2004. The window switch for one window was broken and the speedometer had been replaced around 14,000 miles. Since then, the switch to another window, as well as the regulators to two windows, have died. An outside door handle broke off. The transmission went out in 2006 (a bearing "disintegrated," according to the technician) and is going out again now (2010). The computer is dying and the throttle position sensor. There is a short in the dash that makes the interior lights come on and off randomly, and sometimes a little puff of smoke comes out of the steering column. The seating is uncomfortable and the cup holders are in front of the stereo.

  • Not reliable after 100k - 2000 Hyundai Elantra

I was the 2nd owner, and had it for miles 77K through 114K. During that time, I replaced: front rotors, cracked exhaust manifold (free recall fix), plugs and wires, window regulator, o2 sensor, washer pump, horn, wiring, transmission (OUCH!). The previous owner had replaced the mass air flow sensor and throttle positions sensor. The entire exhaust rusted out too-- salt is tough up here though. Still, thats a lot of repairs for ~30K! And I did the timing belt stuff and tires, which is routine-- but it hurts to do all that and then have the tranny go.

  • No longer a good used buy - 2000 Hyundai Elantra

I bought this car with about 65,000 miles on it, and now have 110,000. If Id written this review before the 95K mark, it would have been a glowing review. However, since then just about everything has come apart-- the transmission (and Im not one to push a car and dont live in the city), the power window, horn, check engine light, oxygen sensor, wiring etc. This is one of those cars that falls apart at 100K, and youre unlikely to find one with lower miles these days. The Elantra was essentially redesigned the *next* year, so the newer models may well be worth looking at.

  • So-so - 2000 Hyundai Elantra

I bought the Elantra used, though only 1 year old several years back. I just traded it in for a Kia a few weeks ago. I was surprised to find it used a lot more gas then I expected for such a light vehicle. Overall it was reliable, it ran fine when traded in and major problems never seemed to crop up. But minor things kept breaking like power windows, dash lights shorted out, dash clock shorted out, cd player broke, and the CV joints (not covered under mfg warranty) kept going even when I was careful about my driving. The interior design was nice, everything was easy to find and use, important in an emergency or when first driving a new vehicle. Outside it looked nice for a wagon.

Has horrible resale value afyet only 3 years old. Service department is horrible also and VERY expensive for maintenance at my service department. Would not buy another Hyundai again.

  • Never Again - 2000 Hyundai Elantra

Rides smooth WHEN it runs right. Numerous stalling, skipping and bucking problems and frequent shop visits. 83,000 miles, 4 transmissions and 2 master computers later, I got rid of this car.

I loved the look of this car, the warranty and after reading the reviews on this site, how could I loose? After talking to the service personel at my dealership Ithink this car it will be TOO expensive to own.The list as follows: 1. Catalytic converter installed ($800! 2. Timing Belt (required after the first 60K) $400! and at first we were told several months ago $300 + 3. The infamous "o2 sensor" this is a known problem to every website on the internet except for edmunds.com $200 4. Change 4 spark plugs $99 (oh yes they also check a couple of things to, but if anything needs to be replaced extra$$$ 5. Transmission maintainence $169 6. Coolaint flushes $100 +

Been a reliable car so far, but, I have this sneaking suspicion that the drive train will start having problems after the 100,000 mile warranty runs out. Only major problem has been a problem with the brake caliper sticking. Also a replacement battery was installed on 1/03, but, considering that this is a manufatcters battery....

  • Nothing but problems - 2000 Hyundai Elantra

I have owned my Hyundai for two years (this month), and I have had nothign but problems. The car is in the shop at least every 3 months. I have already had to get 2 igintion coils replaces, the transmittions replaced (and its going bad again), the catalitic converter replaced, the driver window fell off, the blower motor replaced. I got better gas milage in my 79 Ford LTD than this car after the first 3,000 miles. I WILL be getting a new car before the warrenty is up. Thank goodness for the warrenty!
