  • Be Careful - 2001 Honda Odyssey

Bought it new to replace a Plymouth Voyager. The Odyssey ranks right down there with Chrysler mini-vans in terms of reliability radio electrically shorted at 40,000 miles, transmission at 65,000 miles, front wheel bearing at 70,000 miles, motor mounts at 95,000 miles, passenger door window glide at 105,000 miles (had a cold 600 mile drive home without a passenger window in January as it broke on the week end), driver side window glide at 110,000 miles. Honda paid for the transmission and I PAID for everything else. Total for other items = approximately $2000. Electronic doors "hang" at times but at least they work for the most part. A very nice van IF you dont mind the repair bills.

  • Tranny advice and comments - 2001 Honda Odyssey

Trannies are the weak link in ALL vehicles and especially VANS and MINIVANS. Most people dont realize this and push it to the limit abusing and breaking it prematurely. Be gentle with the tranny and will last much longer than did for others. Tip - find (feel) the changing spots and take the leg off the gas just before gear change. i.e. after 20km/h, 40,80)

  • Poor Gas mileage - 2001 Honda Odyssey

Get 13mpg in city driving. Transmission went out at 90k. A good car, but the gas mileage is killing me.

  • Transmission problems - 2001 Honda Odyssey

Would not be a bad van if not for transmission. Most other aspects of van are acceptable. However, I had to replace the transmission every two to three years. This seems to be a common problem based on the class action suits. My third tranny went after 120,000 miles, 10,000 miles out of extended warranty. When it ran, it wasnt bad, but I cannot depend on it.

  • Horrible Transmissions - 2001 Honda Odyssey

We have had the transmission replaced twice and its bad again. Honda knows its bad but they wont stand behind it. We have had problems with the sliding doors not closing, the check engine light keeps coming on because of an EGR valve they cant seem to correct and had to have the wiring harness replaced and when they did it messed up the navigation system which hasnt functioned properly since the harness was replaced. Thousands of dollars worth the repairs. Total cost of ownership way too much for us and we have been Honda owners for 30 years. Time to look to another auto maker.

  • Our Odyssey for a reliable Transmission - 2001 Honda Odyssey
    By -

We bought our used 2001 Odyssey after our first child was born in 2003. It was reportedly one of the safest minivans on the market and we felt good about the purchase. Within the first year at about 90k miles, the tranny went out and the dealership replaced it. Two years and 40k later, the replacement tranny went out, this time we had to replace it. After only 21k miles on this tranny, it goes out and the dealership agreed to replace it but we had to pay the labor cost which was about $750.00. We did so and sold the van immediately after. We replaced this unreliable vehicle with a Lexus GS400 and have never looked back. If you are looking for reliability, stay away from this vehicle!

  • Its Been A Good Van - 2001 Honda Odyssey

We bought this van new because my 6ft 2in husband could fit comfortably. We owned 3 Ford Aerostars I loved. This van sits lower to the ground I like high. No major problems but I dont understand why it likes to roll back on an incline. Dealer said that was normal. It can carry 4 kids in the back and 3 in the center with the seats pushed together. Ill keep it til 200,000 miles and look at a Pilot.

  • We love our Odyssey! - 2001 Honda Odyssey

We have driven this minivan crisscrossed throughout the southeast and loved every mile. The car has had no repairs. It runs like a sewing machine and has great room for all that my wife buys. We both drive it around town and wish it got better mileage, but at 19mpg city Ill take it.

  • Wife calls this her "Grapefruit" - 2001 Honda Odyssey
    By -

It isnt quite a lemon, but the legendary Honda reliability has passed our van over - hence we call it a "grapefruit." We bought the van new in 2001 and it continues to be our primary family (of five) car. During warranty we had a leaking gasket and a defective fuel pump. After warranty weve had to replace the hinges for both sliding doors and the key cylinder ignition. So the car has left us stranded twice in 8 years. One of the plastic air conditioner knobs split (we glued it back together). The drivers side interior door handles metallic covering started to peel off and was sharp enough to cut my wifes finger. It is now wrapped in duct tape.
