Overview & Reviews
Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.
- Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
- Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

Great commuter! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By bicicleta - January 19 - 10:00 amLove this car so far.... 10K miles @ 50 mpg... commuting at speeds to 80. Plenty of power - cant believe this engine hasnt gotten more press. Wish theyd import the Passat diesel again. The Jetta is just a little small for my two 6 tall sons.

Boycott VW - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By BadBadJetta - December 9 - 2:00 amMy problems duplicate the others, including the yellow door goo, bad oxygen sensors, frequent check engine light (cant believe it hasnt burned out yet), cup holder, peeling door handle, bad ignition coil, bad catalytic converter, and so on. I initially thought I had a lemon, but lets face it folks, they are all like this. After the last episode involving the catalytic converter, I will be rid of it shortly. Im at the point where I dont have enough faith to take it out of town. And current owners who gave good reviews....if you havent seen these problems yet, youre just pressing your luck.

Great looking garbage - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By jjsirico - November 20 - 7:50 pmSame problems as many other people seem to have, power windows are junk. Windows are quite happy to fall down, but never come back up. Replacement parts should be cheap since VW knows this is a major design flaw but they arent. Exterior trim falls off. Cup holder is in such a poor spot that its comical. Radiator fan motor has burned up twice due to bad controller. $600 for a radiator fan, not including labor. Quick car, looks decent, starts every day but prohibitively expensive to repair. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR! (unless of course, you would like to buy mine!)

Good Car - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Phil - November 8 - 5:26 amBought the car new and have had very few problems. Replaced the glow plugs at 100,000, and fuel economy is not what it used to be ... but it still gets over 40 mpg. Great car on the highway or country driving. Feels like a sports car.

Great mileage---if it runs - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By quite_unsatisfied - November 3 - 10:00 amI have had several breakdowns with this car. This was bought as a new car. First, I had an electrical problem, where the security system broke and kept the engine from running. Then, at 30000 miles, the glow plugs and glow plug relay went out, and had to be replaced at my expense because they were not part of the "powertrain" even though the car would not run without them. VW wouldnt replace my warped rotors at 10000 miles saying that they were "within tolerances". Then I had to pay to get them replaced when the warranty ran out. It stopped running yesterday at a busy intersection. I am extremely dissastisfied.

One for the road - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By Ray - November 2 - 4:40 amThis was the Jetta IV. I bought it new with a sunroof, VR6, 5 speed manual, mag wheels. It was my third VW. I expected a well constructed, reliable, German automobile with fair service at the dealership. It is reliable, but something is always in need of repair. Service at a dealer is a killer... $700+ to replace an alternator. Problems: the alternator, springs keep falling out of the front seats, cup holder breaks easily, glove compartment door broke, AM radio has never worked, regulators on two front windows broke, motor on right rear window shot, both water pumps repleaced, MAF sensor replaced, O2 sensors in cat replaced, antenna cracked, headlight covers have fogged over, surge

Ill miss my lil green homey - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By dgrundei - October 16 - 10:36 pmI bought this car used with 43k miles on it from a private seller who bought it new and took excellent car of it. I have since put roughly 75k miles on it and have invested over $7,500 in maintenence unrelated to regular wear and tear. If something goes wrong, its usually expensive. I had a lot of issues with the fuel system, replacing the fuel injectors and intake manifold. Had some issues with the wipers at 100,000 but replaced the motor myself for about 30 bucks. Otherwise, I love driving the VR6. Its fun, trendy, relatively fuel efficient. The heated leather is nice and comfy, the moonroof is perfect for nice weather. Other than sucking my wallet dry with maintenence, I loved this car!

Fun with flaws - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
By matmik - September 27 - 10:00 amsunroof clips broke & they fixed this twice. Was fine for 25000 miles until the front passenger window dropped off the PLASTIC! clips that held it up (this happened twice). The yellow-green grease in the door frame came, and continues to emerge in warm weather. Had the O2/Mass Air issues as well. VW repaired the o2, but not before the mass airflow went, which I had to pay to fix. Interior molding coming off is whats erking me now, but rubber cement fixed that.
