This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • So Good Gonna Upgrade to a Passat - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

A V-6 with stick holds 220 km/h like it is on rails. Problem free. Fun to drive. Been thru 3 Chicago Winters with great traction and performance. So good are going to upgrade to either Jetta or Passat Wagon in Sep when new ones come out -- to get better price and trade in.

  • soooo disappointed with my Jetta - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I have had nothing but problems with this car! Between the car getting stuck in park, BOTH the drivers side and passengers side windows falling off the track in the middle of winter in Chicago, the power steering and transmission leaking, the O2 and mass air flow sensor needing to be replaced, my glove box breaking, my passengers side mirror light breaking, BOTH of my side mirrors rusting, my 6-disc CD changer skipping the CD when its below freezing outside and now needing to replace my tranmission UNDER 80,000 MILES!! I have spent more money and time than you can dream of on repairs for this car. I am getting rid of the car.

  • Enjoyed My Jetta - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I enjoyed my car right from the beginning. I had some minor electrical issues when it was under warranty. Also, there was minor issue with the indicator lights that was repaired under warranty. My battery broke after 75,000 miles and thats when I replaced it. Under warranty, I had an oxygen sensor issue that has been corrected by the dealer. The catalytic converter failed at 60,000 miles, but luckily there was recall on that and my payment was reimbursed by VW. At 97,000 miles the transmission broke. Guess what, it has a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and the dealer replaced it with a new transmission. At about 75,000 miles, I had an air conditioning issue that I had to pay for.

  • Keep the windows shut! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

2 problems, 2 words. Windows! Cooling! I leased the car new and within 1 year replaced a window regulator. I have had it for four years and average 1 a year with an exception for not replacing the passenger side after I turned the car into a commuter. Cooling system has been the final straw and will cause me to never own another VW. Of all the cars Ive owned in my life, Ive never had one have the air conditioning system go out until now. Add to that the fact that the driver side window regulator went out the next day and you have a VERY pissed off owner.

  • Jettas run over 200,000K If treated well - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I have owned 2 Jettas 1999 and a 1995. One Got into an accident and had a little over 175,000 miles and the other is still running till this day at 206,000. Jettas are great reliable cars. If somone has a complaint about jettas they either got the very few bad ones out of the bunch or the previous owner just mistreated it before it came to you. My aunt has one that is over 250,000 miles and running. If these cars are well maintained they run like champs for a very very long time.

  • I LOVE MY JETTA!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought my Jetta new in 1999 and have put over 100k on it. I was in an accident last week where a semi lost its drive shaft and I had to go over the top of it. There was a lot of damage underneath, but due to its great engineering, the car KEPT US SAFE. After getting fixed for about $2k, it rides as good as new. Im giving this car to my son when he turns 16 and have not been happy with any other cars Im looking at for myself. They should have designed the Touareg to be as comfortable as the Jetta. I will probably buy another Jetta!! Hint - after the warranty is up, find a great import mechanic and skip the dealership!!!

  • Adam Sandlers Car Song must be a Jetta - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

All of the problems listed here I have dealt with too, except for the green stuff in the door. The latest: it thinks it is in reverse when it is in park. It wont start in park (only in neutral). When I have it in drive all the gears light up on the instrument panel. My mechanic called TWO VW dealers and VW claims that they have never heard of such a thing! Mechanically the car is in park, but the computer senses its in reverse. (I replaced the neutral safety switch because thats what they thought was wrong, but it wasnt that ... $250 down the drain). I will NEVER buy another VW.

  • Loved this car!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought this car when it was three years old, and it drove like new. Id been wanting a Jetta for some time and it was everything I hoped it would be. The car is very comfy and everything on the dash and console was within my reach. In the five years I had it, it only had a few engine troubles, and it never cost more than $200 to fix. I never had the $1000+ repair bills like with previous cars (Nissan, Plymouth, Dodge). It served me well for the five years and 120K miles on it. I would still like to have kept it for a few more years, but I just got rear-ended and sadly its totaled, so now Im getting a 2005 Jetta Wagon! I love these cars!
