This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • Reliable at first but .......... - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Good car at first but always consumed lots of oil, keep an eye on dipstick ! Windows have always been an on/off problem but car has been reliable until 120,000 miles at which point electrical problems (misfiring) started to plague the car. Had it in several times for same problem. Still not resolved, dealership(s) can not find cause of problem so car now deemed unreliable (broke down 3 times in 1 month on major highways). VW Customer care is totally worthless. Will not reimburse me for out of pocket towing and car rental costs for VW parts gone bad.

First i think is agile, easy to park (i live in NY). For a compact car is very roomy and have a big trunk. Now as most of the owners i have a problem with the power windows(fr.driver side , and rear pass.side)they both broke down bet. nov. and dec. of 2002, to get it fix $350 each(ouch!)one of my headlights broke and a used one cost 180dollars. My point is that if you have a problem with this car youll pay more than any other car (in the same category of course). Im switching to the Mitsubishi Outlander.

  • Great Car!! Awful company!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

My car is a darling. Until the check engine light comes on - then its a mystery until Im in the middle of traffic and I can no longer accelerate. Service is awful! No one should have to pay $45.00 for a light bulb change or $30 for wiper refills, or wait two months for a catalytic converter when your car has failed NJ state inspection emissions and you CANT DRIVE IT!!! Volkswagen service needs an improvement plan.

  • 1999 Volkswagen Jetta 4 dr GLS - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

When I bought the jetta it had 107k on it. I had it for 3 months, put 111k on it. I was hit by a drunk driver and the car was totaled. It didnt handle the crash good at all. She didnt hit me at a high speed. But heres the story on my car. I dont think it was very reliable. The check engine light would always come on. I would have misfires all the time but I had my plugs switched. I had a coolant leak. Had to fix that. The cup holders broke. My glove compartment door broke. Everything falls apart. The car stinks in performance, although handled curves well. But my car was in the shop a lot... I would never buy one again. I was glad to get rid of it. Its a headache to have one. Hope this helped

  • Beware of the Jetta - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

You may look good driving a Jetta but you wont look so cute shelling out money every month for repairs. In less than two years I have replaced the cerpentine belt, the passenger window fell through the door, shocks and brakes, mass air flow filter, many small repairs, $40 oil changes and last but not least the catalytic converter. This single part costs around $1,000 and usually lasts the lifetime of most cars but not the jetta. The cup holder needs to be thrown out the window and I dont know what to do with the gunk that drips from the doors! Youve been warned!

  • Keep the windows shut! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

2 problems, 2 words. Windows! Cooling! I leased the car new and within 1 year replaced a window regulator. I have had it for four years and average 1 a year with an exception for not replacing the passenger side after I turned the car into a commuter. Cooling system has been the final straw and will cause me to never own another VW. Of all the cars Ive owned in my life, Ive never had one have the air conditioning system go out until now. Add to that the fact that the driver side window regulator went out the next day and you have a VERY pissed off owner.

  • Great mileage---if it runs - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had several breakdowns with this car. This was bought as a new car. First, I had an electrical problem, where the security system broke and kept the engine from running. Then, at 30000 miles, the glow plugs and glow plug relay went out, and had to be replaced at my expense because they were not part of the "powertrain" even though the car would not run without them. VW wouldnt replace my warped rotors at 10000 miles saying that they were "within tolerances". Then I had to pay to get them replaced when the warranty ran out. It stopped running yesterday at a busy intersection. I am extremely dissastisfied.

  • Dont buy it!!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Well, I bought this car used and at first loved it - then - the windows wents down on both sides 2xs. the engine light comes once a year. the cup holder broke, the glove compartment broke, sunroof broke 2xs, plastic on the dash board has cracked, windshield cracked, the engine oil burns very quickly so have to check it every 1,000 miles. The volkswagon(hamilton,nj) dealership I go to is very good and have fixed the windows at no charge and check my oil for me at no charge and keep track of it for me. Yes, they know about the window problems and oil problems but there is no recall yet. And I also have that strange yellow goop everyone is talking about.
