This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

  • German Junk - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

If youre looking for a reliable car, dont look at a Jetta VR6. This weeks repair--new catalytic converter. 2 weeks before that it was an O2 sensor and in the last year, trunk sensor, temperature gauge sensor, mass air intake sensor, and the window regulator. Things that still need repair: fuel gauge sensor, dash lights, and seat levers for both front seats are broken.

I just recently traded in my Jetta after getting sick and tired of having it break down and in the shop every month. I have had so many frustrations with this car; broken cup holders, front bumper coming off, car not shifting out of park, nasty yellow goop (that I was told was a blown head gasket), windows falling into doors, trunk motor going out, replaced oxygen sensor, broken glove box, in-dash cd player not working, radio randomly not working, sunroof breaking... need I go on. I have had this car for 3 years, had 8 recalls and only 52,000 miles (had 15,000 when I purchased). Needless to say, I got rid of it after getting way in over my head. If you own a 99 I suggest you do the same.

  • Dont buy this piece of junk!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I wish I had bought an Acura RSX for just allittle more money. Everything just keeps on going wrong with this car, for example cruise wont work, fuel latch wont work, remote entry wont work half the time, O2 sensor went bad, finally the transmission threw a gear uot the side of it. By the way a new transmission from vw is $2,500. I HATE THIS CAR!! Oh yeah the sorry cup holder broke. I guess I just got burned.

  • Horrible!!! - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

My husband bought this car before we were married. It has been a headache ever since. Our windows fell down 3 times, the check engine light keeps coming on for no apparent reason, the whole "protective", plastic parts underneath the car have fallen off, yellow goo is coming out the doors, and many other problems. Customer relations is horrible as well. It is not reliable, and we have considered trading it in. We were expecting it to last a long time, so this is all very sad and a huge mess to deal with.
