I bought my 1994 Explorer XLT about 10 years ago and still enjoy driving it. It has a sunroof and manual transmission which makes it fun. It currently has 130,000 miles. Had some problems with the power windows. The steering rod is loose but nothing too serious. Ive had some instances where the car wouldnt start (engine turns). If I let it sit for a few minutes, it will usually start up. Ive had the engine quit a few times while driving, now that was scary. These problems just started happening in the past couple years. Probably just due to old age and my frugality in getting the car repaired correctly.

after buying what was rated by CR as a "good buy," Ive had nothing but trouble from this 1994 sport model. The undercarriage is rusting out, the tranny went out twice, the ignition module has been replaced twice, windshield washer motors replaced, ac gives out, emissions equipment no longer will pass smog requirements and so on... Without a warranty I would have paid twice for this vehicle, oh did I mention that I had to replace the firestones before the recall was established?

This little thing has done very well under some rather tough usage. Its actually quick and fun to drive - not at all like its 4 door big brother who turns like a boat and rocks and rolls over bumps like an elephant -but he does hold more stuff! Keep up the maintance and little things do go wrong, but.. it will hang in there.

Bought in 97 with 37000miles. The dealer did a very poor job of prepping vehicle and a few days later the wipers were actually shredding during a heavy rain. Then about 3 months later the differential had to be replaced. According to my mechanic, the original leaser must have done a lot of beach driving because differential was rusted and full of sand. I blame that on the dealer (and me for not having mechanic check before purchase!). Since then it has been literally trouble-free... change oil every 3000miles, brakes when needed, and it just keeps going. Just reached 100000miles and am about to trade it in and get 2003 Explorer.

I have had my Explorer for almost 3 and a half years now and I have put more than 65000 miles on it. Favorite vehicle I ever owned. But when she turned over 100,000 miles all kinds of sensors started going bad and all had to be replaced. The camshaft positioning sensor alone cost over $600 including the labor. Not to mention, I am constantly having to have the steering gear adjusted. I love my car, and only wished it would last longer! The repairs have gotten to be too much, but I will be purchasing another explorer.

At 72K the transmission died. The second died soon after. The power stearing leaks. 4wd broken. Differential leaked. Multiple coolant leaks. Replaces ball joints both sides. Ac never worked since Ive had it. Only getting 260 to a tank. Used to get 340. Even after replacing mass airflow sensor and both oxygen sensors, it did not help. Im even using factory recommended plugs! Also have rust forming inside of my door jams and on the bottom of each door since the design allows for trapped water. Now with 150K, I have developed a new oil leak. Fortunately I think its just the valve cover gasket.

Great vehicle. Like most other Fords, needed AC work. Fun to drive. Very reliable. Stylish enough to take on the town, yet rugged enough to go for a week in the woods. The fold-down rear seats make the cargo area very roomy when needed. ~15 mpg in the city - not bad for a 10-yr old SUV!

Within the first yr I had to get another trans put in. Then the gas gage stopped functioning, so I had to count and keep track of my my miles. I was told by Ford that it might cost me over $300 to fix whatyever the problem was, fuel sender, gage, gas tank, etc, etc. The second yr I started hearing noises up front whenever I engaged the 4 wheel drive. Theres something wrong with the way the wheels engage when the 4 wheel is put on. Thats going to cost me about $600 to fix. This past month,(march), the trans went again. Another $1600 for a so-called remanufactured one with a one yr or 12,000 mile warranty.

Purchased used at two years old with 30,000 miles. Drove very well with no problems for 3 years, then all hell seemed to break out with numerous problems. Auto was very well maintained with all required maintenance. At 6 yrs old, driver electric seat shorted out and caught fire. At 5 yrs old, driver seat seatback metal handle broke off leaving seatback stuck in remaining position forever (found corrosion/rust on the metal joint). Overall, have been treated very poorly by Ford service depts.
