This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima receives updates this year that make it less of a family sedan and more of an entry-level luxury sport sedan. Headlining this year's upgrades is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces a stunning 255 horsepower. For maximum performance, sport-tuned SE models now combine this engine with a standard six-speed manual transmission. Other changes include revised exterior styling, additional feature content and an optional GPS navigation system.

Pros:
  • Impressively powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, plenty of room for five adults.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

Ive had this car for 3 months. Performance is exceptional. Braking is good. Turning radius a little wide. Suspension could be firmer. Stock tires have bad wet traction. 6 speed is nice. The interior is very nice, easily seats 5. The trunk is big but opening a little small. Seats great but could use better side support. Interior lighting, sunroof, auto-dim rearview good. Dash display gets washed out at dusk but good at night. The Bose radio good but SCV is useless, bass is bit muddy. HID lights great. I like the styling. My 89 was very reliable. I have not had one problem with my 02 and I expect none for many years.

The 02 Maxima SE rides very stiff. Much stiffer than I expected for a car this size. My 01 Maxima GXE is much more comforable with the softer suspension. However, the stiffness of the SE makes cornering much nicer without tire squeal. Ive also noticed the back end of the car tends to skip or hop over rough surfaces in a straight line. This is probably due to the lack of independant rear suspension. My gas mileage for city driving has been about 18mpg. Overall, I love the car. Its got excellent space, all the features I need (except good stereo speakers), and plenty of horsepower. This is a very solid car, and no where near as bland as the camry or accord.

  • Ok until around 90k miles - 2002 Nissan Maxima

Great vehicle for the last few years. However, around 90k miles the transmission broke. Replacement rebuilt transmission $4200, beware of higher mileage vehicles.

  • Once you go Japanese you never go back - 2002 Nissan Maxima

This one has get up and go. Interior and exterior styling excellent. Ride is good, front hood shakes a bit on hwy. I like the ride and the look of the vehicle. The v 6 is great however it does det 21 mpg, which relly isnt that bad considering the size and power of vehicle. I will buy again. Plus dealer service is great. Never will I buy an american car again.

  • Good Car, Good Price - 2002 Nissan Maxima

When i was shopping around, i was looking at the acura TL (maybe Type S), maybe a low end lexus, mercedes or BMW, but for the money, i found the maxima to be the best buy. the only issue i have is with the sunroof wind deflector wich keeps gettin small cracks, but nissan keeps fixing it for me. by the way to sergei91 you can program your car to NOT make the beep when you lock it with the remote. read your manual, thats what it is for.

  • Sleeper - 2002 Nissan Maxima

Just what I wanted/expected. A sleeper sedan with reasonable performance, a "slush-box," GPS NAV and every amenity I was looking for. After spending the 3 previous years in a 3-series coupe with a manual tranny, limited options (stark German engineering "reality") and driving in metro traffic its good to be back in a "loaded" Max. I previously owned a 96 GLE and it was a great car. Returning to a Maxima was a no- brainer. DISCLAIMER: I WILL buy another Bimmer but at the moment its not the best option for my circumstances.

  • This Sedan Tears up the BMW 325 and Audi - 2002 Nissan Maxima
    By -

Is this a sedan or not? It feels faster than a sports car, except their are 3 passengers in the back. The Maxima goes 0-60 in 6.3 seconds. Thats fast. It is fun to drive. Nice interior, and oh did I mention it was fast. Cars pull up next to the car and have no idea they can get smoked by a family sedan. This max will make the BMW 325 look silly!!!
