This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima receives updates this year that make it less of a family sedan and more of an entry-level luxury sport sedan. Headlining this year's upgrades is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces a stunning 255 horsepower. For maximum performance, sport-tuned SE models now combine this engine with a standard six-speed manual transmission. Other changes include revised exterior styling, additional feature content and an optional GPS navigation system.

Pros:
  • Impressively powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, plenty of room for five adults.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

  • 2002 Maxima SE vibration problem. - 2002 Nissan Maxima
    By -

Im noticing a vibration in the steering and seat but only at highway speeds ( not noticed in the demo ride because it was just around town ). Service people recognized problem. All 4 rims and tires replaced. Slight improvement but still not right. Nissan says this is normal???? Im wondering if theres a flaw in the SE because Ive heard rumors that other new SEs owners have complained and that all SEs on the dealers lot were shown to have the problem.

  • Cant afford a BMW M3? - 2002 Nissan Maxima

I am new to the Nissan experience. In all respect to the autombile, it is definitely a four door sports car. Fun to drive and crisp in handling. The six speed manual is notchy prior to its 1,000 to 2,000 mile break in period, but after a smooth and gentle break in the car shifts smooth and precise. I will definitely recommend this vehicle to an individual who is considering an Acura TL-S. Nissan has given the Tl-S a run for its money. Besides, who can beat a savings of up to $7,000?

This is my 3rd Maxima and I love it! Have only had it 2 days but expect to feel the same for a while. You cant beat the value! This car is loaded!!! Went to the dealer to look at the Altima but was not impressed with the ride and felt was a bit expensive when I considered that I could get a loaded GLE for a few bucks more.

  • PURE ADDICTION - 2002 Nissan Maxima

Just bought the 2002 SE to replace my wifes Olds Intrigue... Now I want to steal it from her. This car has a combination of brute power and silky smooth refinement that is truly addictive. The acceleration is spectacular and it has the handling to make it feel locked down at all times. Complaints about torque steer? Buy a less powerful car or learn to drive - this car is worth the effort. Interior design is gorgeous yet simple and understated. Even the cloth interior is simply stunning. This car is such a perfect compromise between sports car and sedan that it feels like you you havent given up ANYTHING. Nissan hit the sweet spot.

  • Completely Satisfied - 2002 Nissan Maxima

I do a fair amount of driving in relation to my work, so I wanted a car more powerful and roomier (I am 63") than my Mazda 626. Completely satisfied with that choice. Lots of leg and head room, even with a sunroof, which is a power sunroof. Plenty of get- up-and-go, accelerating quickly and smoothly, and handles very well, even on curving mountain roads. Interior is leather with faux wood trim. A bonus is a built in dash 6 CD changer, with a great Bose sound system. I am convinced that a comparable Toyota Avalon or Acura or Honda, etc. would have cost 3- 4000 dollars more. Mileage so far appears to be 22-24 in town, and 26-28 on the highway (using regular unleaded gas).

  • Love it to the "Max"? - 2002 Nissan Maxima
    By -

I have just purchased a used 02 Maxima SE with about 50k on it. I have been driving a 4x4 Tacoma, keeping it of course, so it is a real rush when I hit the gas in the Maxima. I was originally focused on a Camry or and Altima but after test driving the Maxima I fell in love. I paid a little more than I would have for an Altima but I feel a hell of a lot better in the Maxima, no regrets yet. I have owned a 1990 240 SX which I always thought was a little under powered, this is not the case with this Maxima...WOW! If you have owned a Maxima I would love to her what you have to say about it. Does the novilty wear off? Have you had any problems? I hope I dont have a case of "Maximitus".

  • Not if you live in North Jersey!!!! - 2002 Nissan Maxima

Yes its beautiful, fast and rides great but do not buy this car if you live in North Jersy!! The Xenon headlights have been stolen from mine 3 times. As soon as I get it back from the body shop Im trading it in for something with Halogens.

  • Well worth it - 2002 Nissan Maxima

With 255 horsepower (33 more than the 01 model) this "family sedan" is a blast! The SE handles like a fine sports car thanks to the suspension and 17" wheels. Ive driven with verve for three years and the engine, suspension, tires, everything is still in great shape. The only problem I ever had was with the 7-spkr Bose 6-CD player that needed a spkr wire fixed the first year --- the dealer replaced the whole system in less than one day with no cost to me because of the warranty. The car flat-out outperforms all its competition and is more comfortable to boot! (I tried Honda, Toyota, Chrysler, Acura, VW, and Mazda.) Did I mention its a great car? . . .

  • Great ride - 2002 Nissan Maxima
    By -

My 2002 Nissan Maxima has been the best car that Ive ever owned. It has been very reliable and had no problems whatsoever so far. The interior is very confortable, roomy and everything is within reach. In my opinion, this is a very solid car all around. It has the best V6 HP (265) engine compared to others in the same category and year. The gated shifter really complements the transmission.
