Overview & Reviews
The Elantra received a slight refresh for this year in the form of a new hood, deck lid, front and rear bumpers, grille, headlamps and taillights. Interior revisions include a redesigned instrument cluster, vents, center console and climate controls. The engine has been fitted with continuously variable valve timing, and it is now sold in SULEV or ULEV configurations (depending on the state in which it's purchased) which offer horsepower ratings of 138 and 132, respectively. The base GLS model now offers remote keyless entry as standard equipment, while GT models now have a Kenwood CD/MP3 audio system as standard.
- Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultralow price tag, long warranty.
- Poor offset crash test score, antilock brakes available only as a package option.

This is a great car - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
By emorse - March 20 - 12:51 pmAfter 99500 miles, this has been a great car - fun to drive, reliable, economical. The only repair I have ever paid for on our three Elantras was an oxygen sensor on this one. I replaced the rear brakes once (still OEM in front)and the tires twice (only got 35000 miles from the second set). Gas mileage is great, power is great, 5-speed shifts nicely.

I love my car - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
By Maria - March 14 - 4:48 pmI love my car. I wasnt sure about buying a Hyundai although I knew it had been selected as car of the year. However, my mechanic recommended it and I am super glad I listened to him. It is a fun car to drive, I can park it anywhere and gives me great mileage.

Great car! - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
By emorse - March 5 - 3:10 pmIve had the GT for five years now, few problems, only one repair I had to pay for myself. Original clutch and front brakes. Its been fun to drive, economical and reliable. After 99,000 miles, Im looking to trade on a Sonata, and I just wanted to say that anyone who buys one of these used, if its been treated right, youre getting a great value.

Buyers beware - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
By junkhyundai - January 21 - 2:00 amThis car is not reliable. With a few initial minor problems and after 4000 miles later, the engine leaks coolant. A well-made car should not have this kind of problem, IMHO. The point is, you are buying a cheap car and that is what you get. Their cheap service comes as part of a cheap package, too. Be warned. You are taking a risk.

2nd Elantra - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
By stanman - January 10 - 10:00 amWe have 2 Elantras in our family; the other is a 2001 Elantra GLS with nearly 30,000 miles. Both vehicles have performed very well and have proven to be very reliable. The only problem to date was with the radio/cd player in the 2001 model. After the 3rd swap by the dealership (Keyes)its been fine.

Honda quality at Hyundai prices - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
By ALTY - January 10 - 10:00 amI purchased the Hyundai after pricing all the cars in this catagory and driving most of them. I thought I would take a chance on the Hyundai because of the 10 year 100000 mile warranty and havent been dissapointed about anything with the car. It drives and handles every bit as well as a Honda or Toyota plus it will outrun either of them and get 38 MPG on the highway. I will buy another one.

Hyundai still makes bad cars - 2004 Hyundai Elantra
By tigertina - December 18 - 2:45 pmThe steering column started squeaking at 160,000kms. Never had that problem ever before with any other car. This problem is not covered in the warranty, and have learned other drivers have faced this problem. The car is too light and need to put in bricks to stabilize it on the road else it drifts. Didnt matter how many times it was checked over, its like the centre of gravity is off on this car. The car has too many blind spots. This car has had more problems with it then my 1997 fort escort with 345,000kms on it.
