This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

Love the features! Need better shift linkage (smoother) and give the car a horn, not a buzzer!

have to say that the biggest appeal to this car is the fact that not many people even know about it yet, it hasnt become the standard like the honda civic

Just bought the pewter GT (fully loaded)...I love this car! My brother drove it he was completely impressed. He is 6 2" and Im 5 4. My brother had plenty of leg & head room. There is plenty of power for passing, normal excelleration and mountain driving. We had no problems with the power going up steep roads with the A/C on! Looked down to find us going 85 mph! This car has got performance! Good sound and I love that trip meter! So far Iv gotten 30.4 mpg (mountain driving, 75/85 mph and bumper to bumper traffic all while using the A/C!) All around a great car. I found it to be a better buy than what those other manufacturers offer! Get the GT.

I love this car! It has most of the features of a luxury sedan, but in a smaller, more fun package, and with a warrenty that leave me worry-free. Im in college, so its nice to have a car that wont have unanticipated expenses. It handles well enough in the snow, due to the anti-lock brakes and front wheel drive. Im 6-4, and still have plenty of room to engage the clutch and sit comfortably.

  • Great car - no fuss - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Good car. Only issues I had with the car was when the dealer worked on my car. Changed the timing belt on advice of the dealer but when I looked at the old belt it looked almost new. Replace front rotors on the wheel due to rusting ($100 each). Other than that I have no issues with the car. It made it through the crazy upstate New York winter like a chap. Like the go-cart feeling. For the person who did not like the steering feel, take it to a mechanic and tighten the steering column.

  • Lights burn out its a bulb - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I love my car.It has the 100,000 mile warranty, I purchased the extended warranty have had no problems with it,The check engine light come on so your belts and things can be checked..Great car I would purchase another one...as far as the bulbs are concerned its a tiny little bulb that doesnt last a life time for the person that griped about changing the bulb..

  • Good and Bad - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai rides nice and has pretty good power. We have had issues with a connector to the fuel tank, and with a sensor that caused the car to sound out of gear at certain speeds, and with a low idle. The car looks nice and for under 13K is still a pretty good deal, especially with the warranty.

  • a nice little car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I have 70 thousand miles on my elantra gt, replaced rear brakes at 50 thousand miles and I do a lot of stop and go Las Vegas driving in the heat, front brakes at 55. Not bad at all. 35 mpg on hwy at 68 mph, only warranty work-- new tie rod end at 49 thousand miles along with torn left cv boot, leaky sun roof and a leaking rear strut, still have the 3 other original struts in the car all work covered on the 50 thousand mile defective part warranty, the dealer told me about at no cost, 450 dollars for timing belt at 62 thousand miles, a 4 1/2 hour job not like the old days, I would never try to do it like I did my old Chevy prizm too many parts. Hyundai totally honored their warranty-
