This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai's Elantra sedan was redesigned last year, but the big news for 2002 is the release of the GT version, an all-new five-door hatchback that boasts such upscale standard equipment as a leather-trimmed interior, European suspension tuning, four-wheel disc brakes, 15-inch wheels, foglamps and a CD player. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
Cons:
  • Funky front styling details.

  • Reliable, but some maintenance woes - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Just paid off the car. Let me start by saying that the car runs like a dream, is exceptionally roomy for a compact, and maintains speed very well (a must when I drove it across country when I moved from the west to the east). Bought new for the warranty, but everything that went wrong was maintenance parts. Dont get me wrong, It is a fabulous car. You just need to know that you have to replace the headlights every year and tires every 1-2.

  • Good for a first car... - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I got this car in 2006 and it had 54000 miles on it. The first problem I ran into was at about 62000 miles when an engine seal blew, which was probably because i was doing burnouts using the e-brake. Then at 73000 miles i had to replace the brake pads, which is apparently a common problem with the elantras from what Ive been reading. It is important to note that I coast a lot instead of slamming on the brakes so 20000 miles without new brakes was probably due to my driving style. At 74000 miles the head gasket blew and caused the oil to leak into my radiator and now my engine is toasted. The entire time i drove the car it always drifted to the right, even after i got the axle changed @ 7000

  • Value in Hyundais Elantra GT - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

The most standard features @ the best price in the market. Interior detail is sensitive to comfort, design, performance.Others comment my GT looks like a SAAB!Quiet and peppy powertrain. Warranty is untouchable.Drawback=lackluster trade- in value.Dealers say this is changing, but so is dealer attitude:theyre becoming arrogant. Some said my researched figures were bogus,or tried to short--change me on my trade. Found and honest dealer and got a fair trade+$500 under invoice on GT.I bought discontinued Cranberry Color(replaced with weak Chianti Red).warranty is untouchable.

  • An intelligent buy - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Civic and Corolla better? Maybe a little, but this car is a gem for its price. The base features are amazing. Design is a little conservative, but not lame. Build quality seems excellent. 13,000 miles and no problems at all. If you are looking for a really good car at the best value out there, buy this.

Ive read several of consumer comments while shopping for a new car. I bought my Elantra in 2002. It was a base GLS, no options for $9990. It was a lose leader. I owned the car for 5 years and 50,000 miles. The cost of ownership was lower than any other vehicle period. I changed the oil, rotated the tires and replaced the tires at 46,000 miles. Thats all I put into the car. No windshield wipers, no battery, no brakes. Everything worked fine. The car was extremely reliable, started everytime and got me from point A to B. The car was totaled, so Im looking at replacing it with a 05 Elantra. I had a manual, no issues with the clutch or gear box. I drove this car hard and didnt have an issue.

  • Great first car. - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

This is my first new car and its everything I could have asked for. I just got back from my first road trip (1200 miles round trip), the seats are comfortable, the ride smooth, enough acceleration to get around the tractor trailers and excellent gas milage(I got 35 mpg on my trip). The car is decent in the snow, not an AWD vehicle, but capable enough. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a brand new car, especially with the HUGE warranty and the huge list of standard features.

  • Very very nice car - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I love this car. I had a 2000 Ford Focus and it doesnt come close to this car. It has zip. It has pep. It is very fun to drive and you would never even know it was a Hyundai (as compared to those boxes of cars in the early 90s). I strongly, strongly recommend this car.

  • "Highway Robbery" - 2002 Hyundai Elantra

I absolutely love this car. I will find myself driving down the road with a stupid grin of delight on my face. I walked away with this car for under $15K and almost feel guilty as if I stole it. The manual (my first) is a blast to drive. If you dont have a stop and go commute, I would definitely recommend the 5-speed. The interior is nicely thought out with alot of storage. All in all, this car has a little something for everyone. Sporty, roomy, efficient, practical, and luxurious (no joke). I couldnt be happier, because I didnt break the bank, but yet, I dont feel as if I compromised. I doubt I wouldve said the same with a Civic, or Corolla.
