This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2000 Ford Explorer, a color-keyed, two-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel (with auxiliary audio, climate and speed control) is now standard on Eddie Bauer models. XLT Sport/Eddie Bauer/Limited models with 5.0-liter V8s receive a trailer-towing package as standard equipment. The XL is available only for fleet sales, and the XLS replaces the XL Appearance as the base retail model.

Pros:
  • A commanding view of the road, multiple engine choices, one of the most comfortable and commodious cabins in its class.
Cons:
  • Trucklike ride, poor gas mileage with V8 engine.

Bought mine in June of 2008 with 84,000 miles on it. Im the second owner and take extremely good care of it. Maintenance is always done religiously on time. It now has 145,000 miles on it and the only thing it needed was the oxygen sensors replaced. NEVER has broke down on me. Only issue I have is the rear wiper motor is stripped out where the arm is inserted into it and the rear window hinges have stripped out at the screws. I have taken it off-road twice, once in sand, and once up and down some decently rocky short hills and it climbed like a champ...still no mechanical issues! Ill buy another one if gas economy is better. Its an XLT V8 AWD. Prefer to choose 2 WD or 4 WD

  • Reliable AND Safe! My favorite SUV! - 2000 Ford Explorer

We purchased a used 2000 XLT in December of 2010 with 111,000 miles. It wasnt what we were "looking" for but it turned out to be a GREAT buy! Immediately after purchasing we had to replace engine gaskets at $500 through a Ford Dealership here in Phoenix and that was the only problem we had. at 124,xxx miles I had a rear tire blowout on the freeway at 65-70 mph. Hit both barricades on each side of the freeway. The truck was totaled but I literally walked out of the truck with only a broken arm and sprained foot after kicking the door open. This SUV is about as safe as they come and mechanical failures are minimal if you perform the scheduled preventative maintenance.

I drove my 2000 Explorer from 140,000 to 201,000 km. It was so reliable. Always started, never got stuck and never in the shop (except for routine maintenance--oil changes, brakes etc). Before I replaced it, it began leaking a bit of oil and the fuel sensor gauge began malfunctioning, but it still drove like a dream. It was an awesome car with lots of utility--it could carry whatever you needed, through whatever conditioned you faced (I live in Canada). This car provided me with excellent value and should be very reliable if you take care of it.

No mechanical problems, some minor cosmetic issues and the regular complaints: rear wiper, gas mileage . . . Overall this is a reliable, capable, powerful and good-looking truck 2000 XLT 4X4 SOHC 4.0 completely loaded.

My dream car has always been a red Ford Explorer! I am so happy with my car! My car came from Boston, I live in Detroit. Drove it all the way back from the dealer last summer without a single problem! My Explorer is an V8 XLT 5.0L 4 Door with over 180, 000 miles and still going strong! I would recommend this car to everyone (minus the gas, but oh well)! Ive only had to get the exhaust manifold done. Ive never had any major problem with this truck! Very dependable, I never worry about breaking down. I drive from Kalamazoo to Detroit all the time when I get time from school and I feel very safe driving all that way constantly! Being at 181,127, I fully plan on taking it to 250,000 or more.

I now own a 2000 Ford explorer with 124,000 miles on it. I purchased it new and have followed the Ford recommended services. It has been very dependable in rain, ice, and snow conditions. I never drive it off road. Repairs have been required due to normal wear and tear only. I intend to keep it for at least another 5-years or 50,000 miles. This is my second Explorer and I would recommend it to anyone interested in an SUV.

What a joke. 4x4 goes out. Trannys go out. Front end went. Rear end went out. Abs went out. Crank was going. They are built to fall apart and cost you a ton of money and why is everyone wanting shift on the fly four wheel drive? Put that on the floor. Maybe thats why Dodge can beat Ford with the durango.

  • Nice Ford Vehicle - 2000 Ford Explorer

We purchased at 115,000 miles and sold it at 185,000 miles. Solid reliable vehicle mechanically. No major mechanical issues! Little things went wrong like drivers side auto window, electrical issues with factory radio/cd player. However, it always started in cold, never leaked fluids and maintained the V6 power and 4-wheel drive.

  • Love this little truck! - 2000 Ford Explorer

Bought this truck used with 70k miles on it. It has been a champ. I have only had to replace the fuel pump in 6 years of owning it. It has 153k on it now and its still going strong. Made me a believer in Fords. I really love this little truck. I have the 2 door model, and even after the surprise of a baby, the roominess has served me well. Great car for around town, could do with better gas mileage, but on the highway it does OK. Really the most reliable car I have ever owned. Would recommend to anyone.
