This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2000 Ford Explorer, a color-keyed, two-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel (with auxiliary audio, climate and speed control) is now standard on Eddie Bauer models. XLT Sport/Eddie Bauer/Limited models with 5.0-liter V8s receive a trailer-towing package as standard equipment. The XL is available only for fleet sales, and the XLS replaces the XL Appearance as the base retail model.

Pros:
  • A commanding view of the road, multiple engine choices, one of the most comfortable and commodious cabins in its class.
Cons:
  • Trucklike ride, poor gas mileage with V8 engine.

  • Great Car - 2000 Ford Explorer

I never owned a Ford before but I decided to give a try. I bought in 2006 with 124.000 km on it and have had no problems whatsoever. Ive put around 55.000 km on it and still havent change anything, just oil and the belt tensioner. I like the car, comfort and I wish it would be better gas saver, but it is a SUV. I am thinking about getting a newer one.

Purchased in 2005 as a second vehicle with 78,000 miles. Had several Thunderbirds in the past with no problems. This vehicle has done better than expected. Other than tires, brakes and a battery, I had no maintenance issues until I hit 128000. then I needed to replace the brake master cylinder and developed a leak in the radiator. V8 is responsive and I can get 20 on the highway if I keep it at 70 mph. Just sold it to my brother and I bought an 03 Explorer XLT with 60k miles. Hope it does as well. When reading other reviews, it seems people have no problems or the car is a nightmare.

I am currently driving my second Ford Explorer. I previously owned a 1996 with the same options on it and drove it for a couple of years. I finally decided that the mileage was the only factor keeping me from taking it to college this coming fall. Therefore, I sold it privately for about $8200 with 102,000 miles on it. I absolutely love my new vehicle and will probably always own an Explorer whenever I have a vehicle.

  • A reliable vehicle that saved my life - 2000 Ford Explorer

I got this car in college and used it to drive back and forth to ski races around the northeast. It handled amazingly well on snow, plowed effortlessly through deep snow, and also performed well on the highway. My only gripe at all is the low gas mileage, but thats due to the V8 engine. My main feedback about this vehicle is related to safety. I recently totaled this vehicle in a crash. I skid out of control on a gravel road (went around a curve too fast), launched off an embankment and rolled 7 times. My friend and I walked away with little more than bruises. Anyone who has ever seen photos of the crash is amazed--this vehicle held up like a tank!

  • Get a Warranty with it! - 2000 Ford Explorer

My first new vehicle was more unreliable than many used vehicles I had before. Ready for the list: Valve body in transmission, engine rods, oxygen sensors(2), transfer case, front differential seal, drivers side ball joints 3 times, tie-rods twice, passenger side ball joints once, center console collapsed, rear window leak! 5k in repairs! All this by 75,000 miles! Too bad I enjoyed it when it ran.

Started with 4 thousand miles with a noise like a dry speedometer cable that took multiple trips to resolve. During year 4 with around 65K miles I had Transmission issues, intake gasket sucking air, plastic arm rest, and the top problem was replacing front drive bearings, rear axle bearings, front drive all in a failed attempt to get rid of a noise so load even the transmission mechanic thought I should be more worried about it. So for the past 50 thousand miles I have be waiting to see wait is going to fail off so I can repair it.

This is by far the best vehicle Ive had. It looks great, its the perfect size, and its really great on gas! If youre looking for a small SUV I would highly recommend this one!

  • Explorer: An Andevture in Mediocrity - 2000 Ford Explorer

The unadventurous Ford Explorer is built, drives, and feels like a slug on the road. Off the road it bounds like a kangaroo and fails to grasp the rough terrain. This is a functionally ill equipped and under designed vehicle.

  • Very Disappointed! - 2000 Ford Explorer

I commonly refer to this vehicle as my "Exploder"--Ive had to have the engine and power steering replaced, the power window motor on the drivers side stopped working, when I put on the blinker, my windshield wipers start going, and now the transmission is falling apart to the tune of over $1000! When will it end?! Is this what "Ford Tough" is? I would personally like to push this truck off of a very tall cliff!
