Overview & Reviews
For the 2000 Ford Explorer, a color-keyed, two-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel (with auxiliary audio, climate and speed control) is now standard on Eddie Bauer models. XLT Sport/Eddie Bauer/Limited models with 5.0-liter V8s receive a trailer-towing package as standard equipment. The XL is available only for fleet sales, and the XLS replaces the XL Appearance as the base retail model.
- A commanding view of the road, multiple engine choices, one of the most comfortable and commodious cabins in its class.
- Trucklike ride, poor gas mileage with V8 engine.

Why ford why? - 2000 Ford Explorer
By richard - September 1 - 6:07 pmWhat a joke. 4x4 goes out. Trannys go out. Front end went. Rear end went out. Abs went out. Crank was going. They are built to fall apart and cost you a ton of money and why is everyone wanting shift on the fly four wheel drive? Put that on the floor. Maybe thats why Dodge can beat Ford with the durango.

Faulty power windows and locks - 2000 Ford Explorer
By SUVDRIVEN - May 4 - 3:39 pmIve owned 2 Explorers over the last 15 years and both Explorers power window and door lock motors burned out in both! Not a coincidence. There is definitely something wrong with the way these are built. I like the Explorer and would keep purchasing them if that problem was resolved. i dont trust Ford to get that right.

Strike 2 - 2000 Ford Explorer
By Jeff - September 23 - 9:14 pmStarted with 4 thousand miles with a noise like a dry speedometer cable that took multiple trips to resolve. During year 4 with around 65K miles I had Transmission issues, intake gasket sucking air, plastic arm rest, and the top problem was replacing front drive bearings, rear axle bearings, front drive all in a failed attempt to get rid of a noise so load even the transmission mechanic thought I should be more worried about it. So for the past 50 thousand miles I have be waiting to see wait is going to fail off so I can repair it.

Not that great - 2000 Ford Explorer
By Young Mo - December 8 - 2:00 amI have had several electrical problems with my truck, including the radio display, the rear wiper motor, the side mirror motor, and the rear glass defroster. Also had some mystery rattles and am experiencing some idling problems. Will not buy another Ford! The dealership was not that helpful with repairs either.

new engine - 2000 Ford Explorer
By ned - July 27 - 2:00 amMy explorer just went into the shop. Its been the most expensive vehicle I ever bought so we have followed every care recommendation and more. Is it well taken care of with 29000 miles. It will get a new engine this week. Is this a problem with explorers?

WILL NEVER BUY A FORD AGAIN! - 2000 Ford Explorer
By dmw - July 5 - 3:08 pmMy Explorer has had transmission work done on it 3 times in 3 years. It seems like as soon as the one year warranty runs out, so does the transmission. I also have to replace brakes at least twice a year and my check engine light wont go off even after I had the oxygen sensor worked on as instructed by the mechanic. This truck has given me nothing but problems from day one!

Ill Never Buy Another Ford - 2000 Ford Explorer
By FordNeverAgain - March 22 - 11:39 amBought my Explorer with 32,000 miles. At 42,000 transmission blew. At 58,000 transmission blew again. At 72,000 needed ball joints upper and lower both sides, wheel bearing right side tie rods, rotors, brakes, shocks, and tires. I can go with the brakes, shocks and tires -- normal wear but the suspension, no way. At 86,000 head gasket blew and is in the garage again. When it comes out it will be traded, I will not buy another Ford. This vehicle sees all highway. no city. No off road. I really like the Escape but too scared to go through the expense again. 2 transmissions $3200, front end work $2000, now head gasket $1100, coupled with the price of the vehicle I could of bought a Lexus.

Why did I buy this? The Worst - 2000 Ford Explorer
By msqvc513 - January 11 - 7:11 pmFirst complaint is the two doors and how you have to get out to let people in and out theres no way around it. Kinda stinks when its raining you know? Then you gotta be a bit of a contortionist to get back there and out, and they dont give you much space for this. Crummy little windows in the back make you claustrophobic. Okay and THE GAS MILEAGE is horrendous. That car eats better than I do! The rusty side steps, its just unacceptable and embarrassing. Its stuffy in there, no way around using the air vent and the A/C and heat are always either freezing or baking you alive. The roof rack paint is peeling. What else? The rusty drums that had to be replaced at 50k miles, the way it stalls in the cold.

Too many problem - 2000 Ford Explorer
By Chung Ling - December 12 - 10:00 amWithin two more years and 28,000 miles driving, my Explorer had sent back to repair 4 times, not include change Firestone tires. Radio panel has no display, rear whipper motor failed, paint lifting, thermalstate leak. Bouncing and Noising when I drove high speed at freeway. My wife refused to buy any American made car.

It fits in the garage - 2000 Ford Explorer
By CSnow - July 27 - 12:40 amOver all, its OK. The ride is choppy and rough and it averages 18mpg even with the best riding tires I can find. I would not recommend this vehicle for long cross country drives. The spark plug wires have been replaced every 30,000 miles due to heat damage. The brakes lasted 50,000 miles, the A/C lasted to 100,000 (4 YEARS). The engine drive seal failed and now leaks oil on to the manifold, leaving a wonderful smoke trail. The radio lights fade on and off at will and the front drivers side door lock wont unlock with the remote. Most of my driving is dry smooth Arizona highways with no rattling problems and a never used AWD and tow package.
