This Year's Model Updates:

Dual airbags top the changes for the redesigned Explorer. Integrated child safety seats are optional on four-door models. Exterior changes include new sheet metal, headlights, grille, taillights and side moldings. The Control-Trac four-wheel-drive system automatically sends power to front wheels if it senses rear-wheel slippage. This feature can be locked in for full-time four-wheeling.

I bought this truck new and have never owned a more useful or reliable vehicle (22+ cars/trucks over the years). With over 146K miles it continues to look & perform very good, and still has no squeaks or rattles. The only mechanical failures Ive had were the front sway bar links (recall item) and an idler pulley at 105K. Over the past few thousand miles Ive noticed a very slight delay in the transmission engaging when I shift from park to reverse and occasionally hear a soft "thunking" coming from the front transfer case, but cant find anything else to complain about. I love this truck! Id highly recommend these older series of Explorers (95-00).

Big, roomy inside, comfortable vehicle. Good stock stereo and fine build quality. Good paint. Now the negative. I hope Ford changes those automatic trannys. I maintained mine but still went out at 130K miles. Jeep Cherokee/Wrangler, Isuzu Trooper and Toyota use the same AT which is much more reliable. Explorer has poorly designed brakes and rotors. Its also too heavy which causes tires to wear out to fast. The alignment seemed to go out often. Until Ford makes some changes, I expect to stick to Jeep Cherokee/Wrangler. Its ashame because I used to be into Fords.

  • Reliable for 8 Years and counting - 1995 Ford Explorer

Our explorer has been very reliable and provides plenty of room for our family, our dogs, supplies, four sets of golf clubs and trips to visit relatives. Only complaints are the tire wear, its a bit sluggish from stop and some minor electrical annoyances. Overall, I am pleased.

  • PROBLEMS.... - 1995 Ford Explorer

Well I got my 95 in 97 and loved it then. Since then I have had 3 transmissions, 2 thermostats, 2EGR valves and numerous other small repairs. The most irritation thing is the color scheme. Willow Green interior. No other paint job will go with it at all. Lately i got a Flowmaster exhaust cat-back and a K&n air filter and i got back all the power i hve lost over the years from being young and dumb. I think im going to hang on to it and do little modifications for a couple more years. oh and the 96 bumperskirt fits perfect for that intergrated fog lights. so my 95 looks like a 96 1/2 and drives like a 99.

  • Watch out for the transmission - 1995 Ford Explorer

My transmission shop call the truck the "exploder." He loves them, because they bring him so much business. According to this mechanic, Ford used the Falcon transmission with the six, and a better transmission with the 8. My truck is a six. I have had one entire rebuild and a major repair for a cost of approx $3500. The transmission is going into fail safe again. Dont know how much it will cost this time. Truck has 190,000 miles. This works out to a major transmission repair every 65,000 miles. The ventilation system doesnt work properly. The truck will get stuck 4 wheel drive low. It will be a long time before I buy another Ford product.

  • Still not sold - 1995 Ford Explorer

I bought my Explorer in March of 99 when it was 4 yrs. old. Didnt have any problems up until about 2 yrs ago and since then Ive had my share. I have had two of the same problems with the clutch that required a part be replaced. The 2nd time it happened just over a year apart (12 mos and a week) and the warranty was for a year. Also had a problem where the car just wouldnt not start, then miraculosly started working after having to get towed to the shop on 2 different occassions. So Im just waiting for the next thing to break.

I am attached to my Explorer. It has tons of room, a solid feel, great looks, reliability, and versatility. I have 92,000 miles on the car and it runs strong. Great in snow, and has never burned a drop of oil. No electronic glitches or pointless repairs. Easy to work under the hood, and cheap to fix. Lots of torque in the engine, and has a nice jump off the line. Nice sound system, and barrage of features all for a nice price. Needed few repairs, a starter at 85,000, and alternator at 89,000...but that was my fault (dont use power washer under hood). Awesome car, good work Ford!
