This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Okay car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought a new 2001 Jetta GLS 2.0L (4sp auto) back in OCT 2000. I have 85,000 miles on it now and still runs like a new. I dont think I had many problems with this car. But once, there was a window problem which VW dealer recalled and fixed and another one was the automatic shift knob didnt work because when you try to change gears youre supposed to step on the brake for safety, but that sensor broke. I think replacing that cost me around $150~200.. and some light came on but VW dealer took care of.. And thats about it... bad thing about this car is that rear space is too small. No rear leg room. Gas mileage is poor. 2.0L has only 115hp and only get 22/28 miles per gallon.. weak engine

I have had this car into the service department so many times I have lost count. First, the engine light started coming on. Talking with other customers I have met in the service dept waiting room, this seems to be common. The service techs could not come up with a cause so they just started replacing things as they went down the list. Now, the motor on the sunroof I hardly ever use has stopped working. The tech has decided that the motor needs replacing. The interior has not held up well and many things have begun to peel. Oh well, at least it gets great fuel mileage!

  • Think twice or just dont buy! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Dissappointment is all I have to say. I bought my Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1.8T two years ago and have had nothing but costly trouble. Ive replaced my electrical harness, main engine gasket cover, and Mass Ariflow sensor (twice)-each $200-300 in cost. Lights are iffy-Ive also replaced nearly every single bulb possible in and out(rear breaklights twice), the center consoles latch (three times). The continuous rattle from the front panel as well as from the e-brake button are enough to drive you crazy and from discussions with other Jetta owners I know this is a problem across the board. And this week I had to replace the horns-$250! If you want a VW get a Passat. They manufacture these in Germany rather than Mexico.

  • Not exactly "das auto" - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

When i first purchased this VW i only had the opportunity to drive it for 3 days until i was showing off the car to a friend when all of the sudden it wouldnt start due to a electrical ground connection. since then i have dumped over 8,500$ into this HOLE. repairs extremely expensive and often. i dont think i have driven for two weeks without the check engine light coming on for some god forsaken reason. If your buying VW think twice and really look at what your purchasing. have the car checked by a CERTIFIED VW mechanic or you WILL REGRET your decision. oh and by the way ever notice that strange... crayola crayon smell emitting from the air vents??. i moved on. you should too.

  • Call it a VW Lemon Instead - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Ill like my Jetta but heres why Im selling it: Month 3: the rear brake lights blew out (look around at Jettas others are driving, youll notice the same in most). Month 4: O2 sensor blew out. Month 6: O2 sensor I replaced blew out. Month 10: engine wouldn’t start (something about some fuse?). Month 16: left back brake worn out, grinded the rotator Month 23: front right signal and left front head lamp blew out at the same time -- Folks, the repairmen gave me the parts that blew out and they were BURNED TO A CRISP Month 24: I’m selling the car

  • Volkswagen Service is HORRIBLE! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This was my 1st brand new car and VW has ruined it for me. Although the Jetta appears to be a great car, the service is horrible. Ive had a lot of problems with this car. Most recent is my car stalls out of nowhere. Im driving & all of a sudden it comes to a complete stop & my engine light & EPC light come on. Ive taken it to VW 4 times & they cannot figure it out. The worst part is that they are very rude & nasty about it. I have been to 3 different dealershipS in the NY area & have had NO LUCK. Do not go to New Country VW in Greenwich CT, Mayer VW in Larchmont NY or CityLine VW in Bronx NY.

I am utterly frustrated with my car. It has had a repeated problem of engine light issues. The turbo had to be replaced, and then it was realized most of the engine oil was stuck in the turbo inter-cooler. I have been to the dealer 6 times since December 2004 - April 2005. My Air-Sensor has been replaced multiple times. I worry each day if I will be hanging out with my service representatives, whom I know all by first name.

  • Problems - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The car has had many electrical problems. The cheap battery left me stranded, faulty switches renderd the brake lights useless, the glovebox door breaks repeatedly, and the door locks malfunction. Most of this occured while under warranty, but it still occurs now that the car is out of warranty. Of course, fixing these issues is quite expensive even though I consider them manufacturer defects.

  • Too Many Problems!!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I dont recommend anyone to buy this car.The first week I had the car, my window fell!!! Ive been back for that same problem 4 more times since. Ive also had a brake sensor malfunction, so I couldnt get my car off of park and had to get it towed to the dealership. Ive had to replace the airconditioning module and fan and now have to replace the control module for the car. The inside is also peeling, the armrest broke and the seats collect fuzz like crazy. Its not worth it!! Save yourself the trouble. A 2001 model is still rather new to be having all these freaken problems.

  • Never Again - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Fun car..but never again! Rear brakes were gone at 24K miles, but somehow the front brakes were like new. Multiple electrical problems, replaced O2 sensors twice, cup holder replaced, CD player replaced twice, ignition replaced once. Every week I wonder if the car will make it to Friday. This should be called the FIAT Jetta. Im going to sell and look for a used Honda or Toyota.
