This Year's Model Updates:

The 1998 Toyota Corolla is completely redesigned this year with a new engine, new sheet metal and a new standard for safety in compact cars: optional front passenger side-impact airbags.

Pros:
  • All-new with a great engine, new body, and first-in-segment side-impact airbags, the 1998 Toyota Corolla is the best thing to hit the compact car market since the original VW Beetle.
Cons:
  • Shape is a bit dull.

Purchased the car new, excellent vehicle with great reliability. Best car we have ever owned, we will keep it for our grand kids and their kids. Car is getting to be a classic with excellent body lines, still looks like knew. The black flaked paint is awesome and people stop and ask about the color. Just a super car!

  • Best Car I Ever Owned - 1998 Toyota Corolla

I am amazed that I still have the original muffler and pipes on this car! I have it serviced regularly and never had any "surprise" problems with it. Its got over 90,000 miles, is fuel efficient and I love it because its dependable, not because its "fun to drive". Maybe Ill upgrade to the Camry next time but Im sure happy with my Corolla!

Bought used @ 116k miles. Rear struts were gone, outer door gaskets crumbled. (but this is common for this model with age.) needed new cat. Converter @ 138k, my fault - didnt change the plug wires! Runs like a gazelle! (amazingly well!) 163k miles now, uses less than 1/8th qt oil in 5,000 miles - unbelievable! Smog chk only slightly higher than new car! With practice, can get 46 mpg highway, with the auto trans! Original starter, water pump, etc. Im 6,4" tall, 240 lbs, its a *bit* cramped, but for the $$, that it will likely run forever; gonna keep it til it falls apart! Change oil / trans fluid religiously, new plugs & wires, etc, should last 400k miles or more. $3.00 for gas, hah!

I bought my used Corolla just over three years ago and it has been problem-free. It now has about 70,000 miles on it, gets great gas mileage and does not burn oil. The AC and heater do their jobs well and its easy to handle. With an upgraded sound system, the original speakers sound great. This may be the smartest auto purchase Ive ever made.

  • Its as good as they say - 1998 Toyota Corolla

This is a reliable, economical car - just as advertised. Ive had to replace the clutch at 96,000 miles (a little early, in my opinion), but besides that, no worries! I got my Corolla used, and went to the effort to get the 5-speed. Im glad I did, because I can burn plenty of rubber if I choose, and still get 40 mpg commuting to work. How many other cars can boast that, especially at 98k miles? I feel Ive made the right choice getting a Corolla, and plan on driving it for many years to come.

I am not one that takes very good care of their vehicle and performs the minimum maintenance. I have treated my Corolla poorly and it has always performed great and has been as dependable as can be. I have had not one single problem with my Corolla and I have wrecked it and ran over parking blocks by accident and do not rotate my tires or anything. I take it in for an oil change about every 6000-7000 miles and other than brakes and tires I have spent no more money on it.

  • Superb Reliability - 1998 Toyota Corolla

This is the most reliable automobile I have ever owned. We have two 1998 Corollas one is an LE and the other a CE. Both were purchased used at 30,000. Both now have over 100,000. This is truly an economy car needing normal maintenance and only one repair ever: the throttle position sensor on both cars one time.

  • Luv my 1998 Toyota - 1998 Toyota Corolla

What a fabulous small car! I have enjoyed driving this car for 11 years now, and its still going strong. The fuel efficiency is outstanding. I have and never done anything other than routine maintenance on this car (which I purchased new), and it now has 195,000 miles on it. I recently test drove some new cars, and my 98 Toyota actually drove better than some of them!

  • Great Value - 1998 Toyota Corolla

This car has been an incredibly reliable, low maintenance vehicle that has performed as well as I expect a Toyota to perform. Other than the routine maintenance, only had one problem (throttle control valve) that was replaced by the dealership. This is a great car for those whose egos dont need to be soothed by driving the biggest, fastest, etc. vehicle out there.
