This Year's Model Updates:

The 1998 Toyota Corolla is completely redesigned this year with a new engine, new sheet metal and a new standard for safety in compact cars: optional front passenger side-impact airbags.

Pros:
  • All-new with a great engine, new body, and first-in-segment side-impact airbags, the 1998 Toyota Corolla is the best thing to hit the compact car market since the original VW Beetle.
Cons:
  • Shape is a bit dull.

  • Great little car! - 1998 Toyota Corolla

My parents got me this car to drive to college and they have not regretted it. At 5,142 miles, it has plenty of pep-my mother prefers to drive it than her Lexus! The fuel economy is excellent, and the saftey features are also very appreciated. The only problem I have had is the passenger side power window/lock piece springing up-but the dealer replaced it with no charge. It is definately a fun, reliable, and practical car. I would most certainly recommend the Toyota Corolla.

Ive always been a big Toyota fan and the reliability of the Corolla speaks for itself. So I was shocked to learn that at 70K miles Im suddenly burning 1L oil/500 miles. My dealer has recognized this as an increasingly common problem with corollas with the aluminum block engine. Botton-line, engine rebuild even earlier than your average Dodge. BEWARE!

This is the ideal car. A little fun to drive, quiet, comfortable. I upgraded tires which really improves ride and handling. Best value, these things run forever with basic preventative maintenance...

  • Solid, reliable car with no frills - 1998 Toyota Corolla

Have had my Corolla CE with 5-Speed manual transmission for past 8 years (73k miles). Runs same as when new. Its a small car that isnt great on the highway due to the weight and powerplant (and additional passengers and/or having the AC on will bog it down somewhat), but it was cheap, reliable, and gets over 30 MPG city. I have had no mechanical problems - just change the oil, etc. Havent even changed a light bulb. Overall a great value and I plan on driving it at least another few years.

  • Toyota = Reliability - 1998 Toyota Corolla

Ive owned several (4) toyotas now, and this car is by far the best one of the lot. The others were trucks, and performed well for me, but Ive been impressed with the Corolla. I used to do quite a bit of driving (for a long distance relationship) and have put almost 105,000 miles on my car, and its still running every bit as good today as it did when I first purchased it. Ive changed the oil regularly, and with the 6-disc CD changer, 15 inch alloy rims, and automatic tranny, Ive put off plans to purchase a new car in favor of driving this one well into the 175,000 range.

  • Great Car!!!! - 1998 Toyota Corolla

This car is wonderful, no matter how many times I crashed it, it always ran like it was new. I couldnt ask for a more reliable car.

  • Not as good as I expected - 1998 Toyota Corolla

I bought this car two years ago. It caused me a lot of troubles. First the battery became bad, I changed that. The the alternator was broken. The came the brake. It has some problems with starting. I changed the plus wires, it did not help at all. I wish I had never bought this troublesome car.

  • Love my Corolla!!! - 1998 Toyota Corolla

This is a great car, I only had to replace the starter and battery so far. It always starts right up even on the coldest days of winter! I now need to replace the shocks/struts just from regular wear and tear. Its a nice looking car, but the back seat leg room isnt too good. Overall I am very happy with this car and would recommend it to anybody. It has 160k and still runs like new!

  • A Good Year for a Toyota Corolla - 1998 Toyota Corolla

Purchased in 1998 and still seeing the model being driven by others, car has been very reliable and met my travel needs. Design wise it is ho-hum but mileage wise it is excellent. A tank of gas fuels about 300-320 miles - more if you have the Westerlies behind you. Although a sports car fan at heart, the car is my 4th Toyota and it has served me well.

  • It Just Wont Die - 1998 Toyota Corolla

This is a really good car. 12 years, its still going pretty great. My moms trying to get two more years out of it, which WILL happen, before she gets a new one. If youre looking for a reliable car for many years from now, this car is for you. No major breakdowns, except the "check engine" light has been going off. The mechanic says its because a wire keeps getting bumped. For the love of pete.
