This Year's Model Updates:

A 20th Anniversary edition includes the 227-horsepower version of the standard 3.0-liter V6 from the Infiniti I30, as well as goodies like bronze-lensed headlight covers, a body kit, ersatz carbon-fiber interior trim, drilled metal pedals and a number of features normally optional on the SE. This special model also gets an exclusive color: Majestic Blue. A new Meridian package is optional on all Maximas, bundling side-impact airbags and a low washer fluid indicator with heated front seats and side mirrors, as well as special trunk lid trim. Adding optional traction control to the SE or GLE results in a Z Edition Maxima, for some zany reason.

Pros:
  • Silky and powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, room for the whole family.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

  • Excellent used car - 2001 Nissan Maxima

Purchased at 73,000 miles and driven 4,000 in 4 months during one of the harshest winter in Chicago. The car started every time and everything worked great. The engine is very quite and the ride is very comfortable. Fuel economy is worse than expected as it has been consistently getting about 18 MPG in the city but it jumps to 22 MPG on highways. Still very stylish after all these years.

A true dream to drive...almost drives itself-->responsive, sure handling, gobbles up bumps on the road. Never a problem..easily the best automobile Ive ever owned!

  • What a blast !!! - 2001 Nissan Maxima

What a blast to drivel. The only things that I would change would be the front-wheel drive (too much torque steer) and a more powerful sub for the somewhat weak BOSE system. Ive had no mechanical problems - only routine servicing and a flat. But, my front drivers seat is splitting in a few places. The cars got a big backside, so high speed road handling is not a stable as Id like. But, it IS a sedan. And, a big one at that. U-turns arent always made either. But, I got the 20th Anniversary edition, and I love the subtle fascia and body kit extras that come with it. I just wish there was more of a difference between it and the normal SE edition.

  • falling apart at 80K mi - 2001 Nissan Maxima

The car was more or less fine till it got close to 80K mi. The car never came close to the sticker mi/gl - 23 mi/gl at best. After warranty ended (at 36K) - I replaced MAF, rear brake caliper, alternator, battery, all ignition coils, 1 O2 sensor, 2 sets of tires. Ive been battling with check engine light for two months now... $800 later its still on. Dealership replaces one part after another with no end in sight. Now dealership wants $2,000 more to replace both catalytic converters, refuses to do it under emission warranty. I called Nissan Corp.- they dont want to help either. So much for customer service and loyalty. Oh well, last Nissan that my family will ever buy!

  • Difference of Opinion - 2001 Nissan Maxima

Contrary to many of the reviews, my 2001 Nissan Maxima was not that good. I had it for about 4 months before I began to experience suspension problems. So, I contacted Corporate Nissan. Basically they slapped me in the face and denied any responsibility - so I filed for arbitration with a third party. In addition, Nissan does not thoroughly stand behind its products and craftsmanship from their mechanics. I will never own a Nissan and neither will anyone I know. I am going to go back to Acura/Honda were service and quality are of a higher priority than just selling a car to make money.

Excellent reliability so far. Car has 55K miles. Left front tie rod has worn and required replacement. Otherwise, no other mechanical issues.

Bought this garage kept Sterling Mist beauty in Sept 03. Most of the 24,000 miles were highway miles. The sales lady said it was fast and that sparked my interest, naturally! It was and is and I am totally in love with this car. Plenty of power and great gas mileage in spite of the weight of my right foot. The stereo sounds good and the leather interior is super comfy. This car is a dream to drive and great on the highway. Its nimbleness saved our lives one night on the Florida Turnpike. Make sure you tint the windows as this really improves the look. Mine was a "fishbowl" and I had the tint done the day after I bought it. Couldnt be happier with this rig!

Ive owned only Nissans. I had a Nissan Sentra Coupe SE 1991 (first car) excellent used car, Nissan Maxima GXE 1994 used, and currently owned 2001 SE brand new from the dealer. Needless to say I still own this vehicle. Only regular maintenance had to replace struts & springs @ 108k, thus far. Keep in mind, this is the last truly manufactured in Japan vehicle so I cant speak on the newer models. But I can say this, I plan on keeping this vehicle for another 100k hopefully. I considered upgrading to an Infiniti G35, but decided to keep the Maxima since it has been so reliable thus far. Many people buy used and dont realize just how important the previous history is. It can impact you badly.

  • Not Quite a Performance Sedan - 2001 Nissan Maxima

Mileage remains 24mpg consistantly. Stock Toyo tires changed at 60000. They were spongy, a lot of slip angle, lot of understeer, and not good for aggressive turning. Brake disks are warped. Pulsing during stops. Handling is a disappointment. Stock shocks are terrible. Too soft in front. Rear shocks bottomed out at 25000 on small bumps. Body roll in turns is unacceptable. No sway bar in the rear? What we they thinking at Nissan! Blind spots: All pillars are too wide and exterior mirrors are too small.
