This Year's Model Updates:

A 20th Anniversary edition includes the 227-horsepower version of the standard 3.0-liter V6 from the Infiniti I30, as well as goodies like bronze-lensed headlight covers, a body kit, ersatz carbon-fiber interior trim, drilled metal pedals and a number of features normally optional on the SE. This special model also gets an exclusive color: Majestic Blue. A new Meridian package is optional on all Maximas, bundling side-impact airbags and a low washer fluid indicator with heated front seats and side mirrors, as well as special trunk lid trim. Adding optional traction control to the SE or GLE results in a Z Edition Maxima, for some zany reason.

Pros:
  • Silky and powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, room for the whole family.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

Very expensive to repair. Complete brakes over $1000, Alternator $1000, Check engine light, coil, o2 & Knock sensors $1000 and counting. Clock to small and located in the wrong place, Small trunk, seats tear easily. Cant get sticker with check engine light always on.

The car was more or less fine till it got close to 80K mi. The car never came close to the sticker mi/gl - 23 mi/gl at best. After warranty ended (at 36K) - I replaced MAF, rear brake caliper, alternator, battery, all ignition coils, 1 O2 sensor, 2 sets of tires. Ive been battling with check engine light for two months now... $800 later its still on. Dealership replaces one part after another with no end in sight. Now dealership wants $2,000 more to replace both catalytic converters, refuses to do it under emission warranty. I called Nissan Corp.- they dont want to help either. So much for customer service and loyalty. Oh well, last Nissan that my family will ever buy!

  • Difference of Opinion - 2001 Nissan Maxima

Contrary to many of the reviews, my 2001 Nissan Maxima was not that good. I had it for about 4 months before I began to experience suspension problems. So, I contacted Corporate Nissan. Basically they slapped me in the face and denied any responsibility - so I filed for arbitration with a third party. In addition, Nissan does not thoroughly stand behind its products and craftsmanship from their mechanics. I will never own a Nissan and neither will anyone I know. I am going to go back to Acura/Honda were service and quality are of a higher priority than just selling a car to make money.

Bought SE model, loaded, new in 01. Check engine light and o2 sensors a continuous problem for last 8 years. Dealers stick it to you each time attempted to fix these issues. Finally gave up years ago and just live with. Car now has 200K miles and continue to drive as winter vehicle, but must say the engine has been very solid. Bought a 15" Blizzak tire/wheel package (all four wheels) to replace the 17" Potenzas for winter driving and this car rolls through the bad winters of Upstate New York like 4 wheel drive! Would likely not buy another Nissan vehicle as the frequent warning lights on the dash are just a pain.

  • Maxima SE 2001 - Not So Good - 2001 Nissan Maxima

I know numerous people that love their Maxima, but Im not one of them. Heres why: 1) CD was bad when purchased and had to be replaced 2) O2 sensors were bad and took 5 trips for the dealer to fix. 3) Paint on front bumper doesnt handle road debris well. Looks like its peeling and very unsightly. 4) Alternator just replaced at 55K miles (car isnt 3 yrs old yet). Contacted Nissan about covering it (warranty)anyway - they asked a bunch of useless questions to determine if I was worth bothering with and refused to help. 5) SE model tires are very expensive. OEM tires (Michelins) perform bad in moderate rain. I will NEVER buy another Nissan again.

This car started out ok but just out of warranty a computer module failed and cost about $700 Can. After that we have put thousands of $$ to keep it on the road. Its in the shop now. Another computer item for $1000 incl labor. It was towed into the shop to get this fixed, and this is the second time it had to be towed. Last item it was the alternator $700. The vehicle now has 190,000 km which is quite a bit but did not expect to have get rid of it this soon. I have never had a vehicle as unreliable as this one. I would have to be crazy to ever consider another Nissan product.

We have had our Maxima Se since 10/01. It has approximately 18k miles. At 12k miles, we found a crack in the rear spoiler. Nissan would not fix it. It was only covered up to 12k miles. Just this week-09/08/03-the car died and would not start. It had to be towed to the dealer for repair. They still do know what is wrong with it!
