This Year's Model Updates:

The Hyundai Sonata is redesigned for 2015 with a more refined look and a larger cabin. A new Eco trim level with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine also debuts, although the more powerful 2.0T trim level has nearly 30 fewer horsepower.

Pros:
  • Smooth ride
  • Lots of standard and optional features for the money
  • Quiet and roomy interior
  • Solid build quality.
Cons:
  • Sweeping roof line compromises headroom for taller passengers.
  • Disappointing acceleration from Sport 2.0T

I had a 2009 Sonata, and a 2012 Sonata, with no problems. I never had them back for any warranty work. This is not the case with the 2015 Sonata. I have had the car for just 1 year, and have been back for warranty work 8 times now. It is the Last Hyundai I will ever own. Had it back 3 times to fix the rear window defogger switch. Twice for the right front brake caliper recall. How can it be that Hyundai does not have the part in stock for a recall item. Service manager told me they can not order the caliper until they are sure I needed one. If that is truly Hyundais policy on a recall item, then I dont want any more Hyundais. I had the car back three times to get the front passenger seat belt fixed, and it is broken again. As far as the gas mileage, I get about the same as I did with the 2012 Sonata, even though the 2015 is suppose to be 2 MPG better. Acceleration is not as good as the 2012 had. The ride and comfort level is good, a little better then the 2012 had. Last time I will buy a first year redesigned model.

  • BEST IN CLASS... and two classes above it. - 2015 Hyundai Sonata

As a "Car Guy" my congratulations on over achieving with the 2015 Sonata Limited. With the Luxury and Ultimate Packages this car can complete with $50K cars like the ES 350 and the Hyundai Genesis with $20K less out of your pocket. That savings equals free gas for the next 300,000 miles. The ride quality, cabin quietness and room, tech features and MPG make the other cars in its class seem like Model Ts. My wife is far from a car person but she fell in love with our new car!!! GREAT JOB.

After having many cars spanning many years (Im a car junkie), I can say that I enjoy this Sonata. PROS: The design is great. The ride is comfortable. The steering is smooth and effortless. The engine is quiet and moderately powerful. The HVAC performs flawlessly. It feels as though there is a stop-neutral feature (I personally like this, but one has to remember to give the pc a second to engage before throttling). The engine idles smoothly and the transmission shifts perfectly (despite the fact that it has an electronic throttle module (and likely a TCM elsewhere) placed right at the front of the engine for all of the radiant radiator heat to blow on it, will see how that device holds up over time). Tire and rim sizes are perfect (that doesnt always happen). The interior visibility is good with the exception of the rear window (I use blind spot mirrors so I dont look back there nor do I turn my head to look out windows when lane changing, it isnt necessary). When braking, I really enjoy that the transmission gears down, finally creeping up to a stop, I have had to only put forth minimal effort when braking. CONS: I have only had the car a very short time so my input is biased (I love this new car) and questionable and any rating regarding reliability isnt valid. I cant say enough how much I hate plastic components bolted onto a hot metal engine, that said, I dislike the plastic intake manifold. The Electronic Throttle Module is located at the front of the engine, uncovered, unprotected from radiant heat and water/particles from the grill (I had a Volvo and plenty of Fords with that darned ETM... There is body roll when cornering, but that is to be expected with most mid-class mid-size sedans.

  • Be prepared for issues if you buy the 2.0T - 2015 Hyundai Sonata
    By -

3 times in 3 years the turbo has caused issues. The first 2 times, the engine lost power due to the turbo failing. The 3rd time, the oil line from the engine to the turbo is leaking oil all over the place. We only have a little over 64,000 miles on this car and Hyundai will not cover the repair under their extended power train warranty.

  • Hyundai Used to be Awesome until 2010 - 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Ive owned 4 hyundais now. 1 2003 Accent, 1 2005 Elantra and 2 Sonatas (2010 and 2015). The first car was a lemon that I bought in Fall River, MA... Empire Hyundai... and I had to fight with the dealership hard because it needed the same repair over and over again. I got an elantra as a substitute and that car was fantastic. No complaints. in between 2005 and 2010 i owned many used and mostly new cars. I decided to get back into Hyundai again so I got a base model sonata in Virginia. I should have never traded it in, it was great. Bought a Cadillac which was great but i was hitting 100k and driving 140 miles a day, the repairs were adding up. Went back to Fall River thinking that the same money hungry jerks werent there, well they werent... just a new set of them were. Somehow, they managed to add an addition 5-10k to the loan, running me in circles because i was asking the same question "I dont see the trade in value for the car" to which they consistently answered me back saying, "we paid the loan off, its here" that wasnt my question. I called a lawyer and finally found that they added some charge that i would have NEVER agreed on if they had asked me if I wanted the service... some how they got away with it. They wanted me to go back to the dealership to talk about it, i said no, i didnt want to be taken advantage of for a third time in 1 month (i had gone back two days later and resigned paperwork for lesser service fees etc... stupid... i was stupid...). So im already sour because I hate this dealership but I love the car, its awesome, adaptive cruise control was worth it. The idea of driving 140 miles a day with ACC was like the highlight of my life. Up until a week ago. Im trying to get on the highway, i sped up (its on a slight hill) and the car starts to jolt. Ive seen this before, ive felt this before in my first hyundai, the accent. My heart drops. Here we go again. I press my foot down on the gas hoping it will just go away and stop jolting... no. 2 miles away from the next exit Im shaking like crazy and get to a stop light. Turn the engine off and turn it back on... now its shaking worse and not only that i can barely accelerate. Ok good now were going but were still shaking and jolting every which direction. I some how make it to work even though some idiot in front of me is stopping in places they shouldnt stop in the road (because why not, that WOULD happen). 2 hours later I tell myself im not going to let this sit im going to go to the dealership. I call and make an appointment. OK be right there. Get in the car, turn it on in hopes the shaking is still there but not there at the same time ... the check engine light comes. good grief. the nav display asks if i need help i said heck yes please. i get connected to hyundai assistance and within 3 minutes into the call, the car engine shuts off but the battery is still going so i can communicate to the guy. I get towed away for free. What a monday. I get to the dealership around 5:30 after waiting for 3 hours for a tow. Im tired, I havent eaten and I just want to eat, go home and pass out. I get to the dealership and they say to me oh, the last shuttle left for the day but you can always call an uber. What is wrong with you? I just bought this car July 7th, 2015 and it only has 25k and you want ME to pay for an uber? I dont even know where the hell I am. Im from southern MA not northwest of boston. He sends me to the waiting room. 20 minutes later, "has anyone replied back to pick you up?" i bite my tongue trying to be nice, "no, im not from here, everyone is about 2-3 hours away". "oh." yeah, oh. I walk out without anyone seeing me and go to chilis next door and vent. My friends come and pick me up and drop me off at home. I call the next day. "Can I have a rental" "Well we can hook you up with a 55 dollar a day rental from enterprise" "look, I didnt cause this issue, I didnt get into an accident, I did not ask my engine to jump around like a Mexican Jumping Bean in the chassis... I am NOT paying for a rental and I am NOT paying to use uber. I already have a daily expense for a car and its sittng in your garage. why would I want a second one...??" he said thats the best he can do. This started Monday, the call i just did happened tuesday. I didnt call Wednesday. I call yesterday asking for an update... well your cars engine is outside of the chassis, we asked for an overnight on the part we believe will fix the problem but the part is back ordered nationally." are you kidding me? he offers this rental again for 35 dollars I said i wasnt paying a dime. Not one single dime for a problem i didnt create. The only problem i created was involving myself with hyundai. ill never EVER buy another hyundai as long as I live. Never. Unfortunately before of the jerks I bought this car from added additional debt, Ill never get myself out of negative equity. ever. There is no ETA. Im disgusted.

  • Checkout all my problems before you buy. - 2015 Hyundai Sonata
    By -

I got this car last week. Let me give you guys some feedbacks. Overall the car drives quite well for a 4-cylinder turbo. Noise level of engine and drive is somewhat in the mid range. My previous car was a 2012 Genesis and this 2015 Sonata is not better but doable. Cons: The car doors were not aligning correctly. Doors were a bit off from the quarter panels and rear passengers door. I was not able to open drivers side passenger the door. I have to pull the handle twice in order to open the door. Dealership had to take my car in for a day to fix these issues. I got the car on Friday and return to dealership for repairs on Monday, go figure.

  • A Major Change! - 2015 Hyundai Sonata
    By -

Im slightly biased, I lived in Korea for 12 years; and I have purchased Four (4) Hyundai Products previously. Hence I have known them to be good, solid, reliable vehicles. I traded In my 2014 Kia for the SONATA SPORT. Sitting in my driveway is a 2003 KIA OPTIMA, 88,000 miles and last year, we had to have left half shaft replaced and thats it. I normally drive a Cadillac DTS; my first was in 1973, Coupe De Ville. Hence I have grown accustomed to driving a great riding luxury car with all the bells and whistles. There is truth in that saying Rides like a Cadillac. I know that the Hyundai is reliable, and a great value, BUT I was totally stunned when I test drove the SPORT Model. Additionally, Ive always had more than two cars, and one would always be a Performance Model; Corvette, Z28, Trans Am, Cadillac CTS-V type vehicles. As I initially drove into the traffic I was impressed at its ease to get into traffic on a Six Lane Major Road. I am NOT a fan of the Four Cylinder Engines, the sound I dont like. But I did not know at that moment that IT was a Four, I felt what seemed to be the V6 type thrust. As I merged onto I65, there is a major intersection; the on ramp and the two lane exit ramp coincide, people coming to the right, and you must cross two lanes to get into the 3 Lane main road. It is a hard trick as the Speed limit is 70 and most folks are truly running 75 MPH, so you have to have acceleration to pull away from the oncoming cars are you traverse 3 or 4 lanes of traffic. Im Used to a V8 pulling me across this intersection. I was in Normal Mode, and at first it seemed that I was not accelerating, but I then noticed that I was going 70 and pulling away from the traffic. I was going to the far left lane and was going to lock down the speed at 75. I looked down and I WAS GOING 85 MPH! I had been fooled by the silence of the car! For a few minutes I let it run at 80 MPH and intentionally, I had left the Audio off and this was to listen for any odd things. I was stunned at the quietness of this car. I say, damn, this thing rides as good as a Cadillac!! Then I discovered that the Cruise Control works very uniquely by keeping the speed pretty close GOING DOWN HILL! One of my pet peeves is when you go over a hill, hit the brakes, then you have to re-engage the system or it will be definitely speeding. Im a fairly large man, 60", 235 lbs. My comfort test is I get in, get comfortable seat placement for me; Im paying for it, right? Then I get out and get into the rear seat and see what that comfort level is. I got in back and was totally stunned at the knee room. What totally blew me away was the passenger lowered the back rest very far back while I was sitting in the rear. The rear passenger still had great knee room AND on my side, I had a good Four inches between my knee caps and the seat!! To be honest, more room than a DTS in knee room, and Great for Two Passengers, ONLY! But those two get a fantastic place to ride. On the way back from our 75 mile trip, I put it into ECO and my onboard system began at 29 MPG as were returning but about 20 Miles later it was reading 40 MPG! I took that figure with a mild grain of salt, as the algorithms for mileage calculation is not always the true MPG. But even if it was ONLY getting 35 MPG, I was impressed by the solid and quality build properties of this vehicle. When You slam the trunk down, you get a nice solid chunk. Same with the Doors. I also purchased several additional programs that basically provide me with Seven Years and 70,000 Miles of Bumper to Bumper, what ever happens it gets fixed, free oil changes, tire rotations and more that includes all the High Tech Items!! I believe that the ONLY thing I must do is put GAS in it, and enjoy driving it, and so far, this has been a ball of a car! Thumbs up to the Hyundai Corporation for listening and continually attempting to improve the product in many ways to create a great vehicle. AND I was very delighted with the OWNERS Manual. Small, easy to use and simple. A GM Owners Manual is about one inch thick and is confusing at best; IF you car is equipped with this option... I dont know if it has the Bingo Banga Torque Splitting Auto 7 speed or the 9 speed?? Very Good!! I also found that the Mode Settings actually have some effect as desired. Many vehicles will list great sounding Accessories, but Like the BMW, you cant use the system very well without taking eyes off road. Does it Work? I pretty much used intutive knowledge to operate a lot of stuff prior to reading the manual to find out even more technological features, Hill Hold, KOOL!! OH, and one of the BEST FEATURES of this vehicles is ITS GREAT LOOKING!!

  • One week rental with a Sonata SE - 2015 Hyundai Sonata
    By -

We have a car in the shop, so Ive been driving this for a week. I like it - maybe not enough to buy one in this configuration, but I do like the car very much. Its very quiet. It seems to be getting better than 25mpg in reasonably spirited driving. For a 180ish HP engine, I have not felt like there was not enough power at any time - even in the Eco mode of the transmission, which has three modes plus fully manual shifting (1 - 6th gear). The Bluetooth works well from the limited use it has gotten - it will read my text messages on my Windows 8.1 device - this is a HUGE plus for me. I am sorry that the XM trial has expired, I wouldve liked to judge the quality of the reception. Overall the radio is just OK - kind of tinny and the radio display shows you the radio station (105.1 for example) and nothing else. Maybe XM provides more info, I couldnt test it... It seems really big inside, and it is very comfortable. Ive been a fan of the trip computer with two trip odometers, and all of the user-settable configurations for the lights, sounds, language, etc. Tire pressure info for all four tires is handy to have. I really appreciate the auto-off headlights, even in the lowest trim and Ive just turned them on and forgot about them - the gauges are still perfectly legible with the headlights on all the time. I appreciated the holder for sunglasses, even in this base car. The Air Conditioning seems to be super effective too. If you unlock the car with the remote, and dont open a door within 90 seconds or so, the doors lock again - I like that. Big trunk, lots of space. The back seats fold down too, but I havent played with those at all. The rear doors open way up - great for access, and potentially an easy in/out for a kid in a car seat, but I didnt install one while I had it. What didnt I like? The looks are a bit too angular for me, I liked the way the previous model looked. The radio was marginal. The base sedan must have cheap tires, because this rental with only 21K on the clock already had mis-matched tires on it. No compass in this model, thats a bummer. I would really like fully automatic headlights, but that was not a reality in this model. Overall, I think that this is an honest competitor for the Camrys, Altimas and Accords of the world. Im glad that I rented one for a week, and if this is seriously on your shopping list, I think that maybe youd be wise to do the same, and see if you like it as much as I did.

  • Sonata 2015 Eco! Nice car. - 2015 Hyundai Sonata
    By -

I just bought mine maybe 2 weeks ago! This is my 3rd Hyundai. Very happy with the brand. Its a midsize car, roomy interior, with the gas mileage of a compact car. Awesome! They give you alot for a base model. The only thing I did not like is the stereo. Its VERY LOW wattage and low sound. I didnt realize that other models had an upgraded sound system. Disappointing, since I like loud sound and bass! Other than that, Im happy!

  • Quality of leather seat is poor. - 2015 Hyundai Sonata
    By -

Bought a 2015 Sonata Sports in July 2015. The drivers seat leather color is coming off. Its turned grey and looks worn. I have contacted Hyundais consumer department and the dealership about the problem. They say its worn out from getting in and out of the vehicle. This is poor quality!!! They say they cant correct the problem. Why do I have a warranty if the problem cant be corrected? I have had leather seats in other cars I owned and his has never occurred. One car I had for 10 years and this never happened. A vehicles leather seats should not begin to deteriate within a year. Its disappointing that Hyundai doesnt stand behind their products. This is the first and last Hyundai I will purchase.
