Overview & Reviews
Bigger inside and out, the redesigned 2001 Elantra boasts stylish sheet metal, a refined 140-horsepower engine and improved noise, vibration and harshness characteristics. Poised to tackle the best in the class, the Elantra comes well equipped for less than $13,000. Though the useful station wagon model has been stricken from the lineup, a five-door hatchback is set to debut next year.
- Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
- Funky front styling details, wagon no longer available.

Not Worth the Money - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By HyundaiOwnernMD - December 29 - 2:25 pmI would steer clear of this vehicle. Since day one the car vibrates excessively and makes loud noises when driving at speeds of 55 mph or higher, regardless if A/C is on or off. Took it to dealer where I purchased and they told me "All of the Hyundai Elantras due the same thing". Have also been told its because its a 4 cyl, yet other 4 cyl vehicles Ive had ride a lot smoother and quieter than this vehicle. Not to mention the exterior "looks at" something and gets a dent. Save your money. Not worth the annoyance.

Control arm?? Not - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By dogmollie - January 27 - 10:48 pm100,000.00 miles nothing covered, car has 74,000 control arm broke??? Not covered, pulled out transmission, not covered. Dont buy these cars the warranty is a joke, hey they let you talk to a consumer advocate, huh right they consume your money. This was my second Hyundai first one lasted 225,000 miles and was running well when I sold it. This is my last Hyundai and I tell everyone I talk to to avoid these cars now. They changed something, and no longer need loyal consumers. Stay away from these cars.

unnecessary Hype - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By Sebben - November 13 - 4:41 amI bought this car after reading the review at Edmunds. Whoever is the author should be fired. Dmn, you should be nuts to compare this one with civic. Let me list the problems, 1. Transmission seals leaked 2. Transmission sensor doesnt work 3. Trans axles have problem 4. the check engine light never goes off 5. Emission canister always go bad. 6. poor mileage. 19 on highway I can get it from a good SUV A waste of money. I have already spent over $1500 in repairs

You get what you pay for, if that - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By StangFan247 - January 10 - 8:12 pmEven for an economy car, this car falls short of the competition. The handling is sloppy, acceleration is weak, and same goes for the brakes. The only "plus" about this car is the gas mileage, which is still not too good for a 2.0 4-cylinder (est. 25-27 highway). The interior is not that appealing, and the seat is quite uncomfortable, and after about a year, the interior smelt worse than my friends 93 Ford Escort. There is absolutely no style whatsoever. Ive seen pizza delivery cars more appealing than this tin can on wheels. Get a Civic or Jetta.

Warranty to trap you into a low quality - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By misti - May 31 - 6:31 pmI have had the worst luck with hyundai. My elantra had the gas pedal stuck and at 3000 rpms on the freeway as i was trying to change from one to another. The warranty is NOT worth the car as I was in the dealership EVERY month!! The input speed sensor, output speed sensor, warning lights, check engine light-hose leaks, ALL on seperate occasions. Then the dealership(Anaheim) told me nothing was wrong with my ac but it has a hideous sound when i turn it to four. they waited until after my warranty expired to tell me NEVER again will I buy from them. The warranty is not worth the endless trips to the dealership (with no loaner either).

What a piece of $@*# !!!!!!! - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By SH - April 6 - 2:00 amFour months after purchase: rattling noises, lost a lot of pick-up, and car kicking when going past 30mph. Dealer determined: "all components are functioning to factory standards." Brought car back 5 times and not fixed. Two weeks ago, car lost more pick-up, rattling strongly when in idle, lost almost all power going from 45 to 60mph. Went to my mechanic and asked him to check out. Mechanic asessed that there is something wrong with the fuel injectors and the trans and the air filtering system is not functioning properly (water seeping in). Well see what the dealership says to that!

Dont buy this car - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By irishfiregoddess - January 30 - 2:00 amI have had nothing but problems with this car from the day I purchased it, BRAND NEW. The alignment was way out of whack the minute I drove it off the lot. Also, I failed inspection, on a BRAND NEW CAR, because the right rear brake wasnt up to code. A week later, the pulley for my power steering just fell off and I lost control of the car. Luckily, I was only doing 30mph. The pulley, again, on a brand new car, was stripped. Now I am having problems with the rotors, and the hose for the coolant was corroded and had to be replaced. The car is only 3 years old. I am sorry, but this was a horrible buy and would never recommend this car to anyone.

Careful - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By pfc95 - November 3 - 2:00 amThere is a reason that this is lower priced...quality is not good. Currently my Elantra with 44,235 has had 2 front bearings replace and a tie rod end. Window panel on door rusted out and its not covered!!! I needed to bring the car back with 33 miles due it not being properly prepped (tire air pressure at 15psi etc.) Warrenty is excellent and they fixed with no charge but beware, it will need fixing and often!

You get what you pay for! - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By goose.one - September 19 - 10:00 amI purchased the car as a commuter car. Highway gas mileage was poor considering the 4 cyl engine felt like it couldnt get out of its own way. Service at the dealership was sub- standard to say the least. I had to have the radio replaced , an electrical problem, 2 alignments, and a check engine light go on, all under 10,000 miles. Handling was very poor, especially in bad weather. Terrible in the snow for a front wheel drive car. Just recently involved in a frontal collision after hydroplaning in the rain on the highway. The car crumpled up like a tin can, AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY!
