Overview & Reviews
Bigger inside and out, the redesigned 2001 Elantra boasts stylish sheet metal, a refined 140-horsepower engine and improved noise, vibration and harshness characteristics. Poised to tackle the best in the class, the Elantra comes well equipped for less than $13,000. Though the useful station wagon model has been stricken from the lineup, a five-door hatchback is set to debut next year.
- Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultra-low price tag.
- Funky front styling details, wagon no longer available.

Good Value - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By laura - January 7 - 12:17 pmI purchased my 01 Elantra in early 2002. To date, Ive had no significant repairs, and have sunk very little money into the car. Its not the fastest, greenest, most luxurious, or best performing car on the block. But it is very reliable, and has just enough comfort, safety, mpg, and performance to make it passable. If youre looking for a great value, and reliability in a commuter car, this is it. Nothing fancy, but it does the job, without time in the shop. ( Which can be a huge deal if your husband needs to borrow your car all the time because his Saab is in the shop every week!)

Great car, 18 year old owner - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By joeychris909 - December 29 - 8:17 pmGreat 1st car. This is my 1st car and I love it. Gave me some trouble like the leaking transmission, headlight burnouts, fading dash clock, and the airbag light. Im 18 years old and this car has been fun to drive with a decent amount of space. Other Young people like me would choose a Honda over a Hyundai but I chose the Hyundai. Still runs strong with 156,780 miles!

Have had this car seven years! - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By Terry - December 19 - 3:03 pmFirst let me say that Hyundai sticks with you all the way with their 100,000 mile power train warranty. They fixed the differential in my car at 95,000 miles free of charge! I never incurred any major repairs other than worn parts. And its been a gas to drive. Steering is very responsive and the standard drive provided excellent gitty-up especially in the mid ranges over 40mph. I would buy it again but the exterior of the 2009 model is just plain looking and they discontinued the hatchback.

disappointing purchase - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By georgina - November 25 - 1:39 pmWhen you own it for over a year...I bought my elantra dec 08/2000. Within 1 1/2 years had to replace right front bearing - not on warranty. This car has been a money pit. I kept up on my oil changes and warranty work at the dealer. The motor went @ 5000k over the warranty - used motor, towing and rentals - @ $5500. Hyundai did nothing to stand behind the car. Among many other things, i.e. struts, other bearing, cv joint etc., transmission went on 5th anniversary of car - $3000. I paid $15,000 for this car and have spent that much in various repairs. I have spent close to $30,000 on this car. My Mazda 323 was 7 years old before I had to spend $$$ on it. Buyer beware.

Wow, nice car for the price! - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By Seely - November 20 - 1:32 pmBack in 2001, after a hail storm hit, we were looking for a new car. We decided to look around, and noticed Holmes (the dealer we bought from) had discounts on cars on the lot due to hail damage. Of course, we managed to get it new for 9,572 dollars due to hail damage, and a little persuasion. Love it. The only Major problem weve had was a broken thermometer. It does get a little noisy on the inside. Its 2.0 i4 gets enough Punch, and still returns good mileage. Nice exterior styling, however, the interior was slightly drab, but not too bad. Nice trunk space, and a locking gas door. Inside trunk handle is Nice. Trunk room is fantastic, and the reliability wont disappoint.

unnecessary Hype - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By Sebben - November 13 - 4:41 amI bought this car after reading the review at Edmunds. Whoever is the author should be fired. Dmn, you should be nuts to compare this one with civic. Let me list the problems, 1. Transmission seals leaked 2. Transmission sensor doesnt work 3. Trans axles have problem 4. the check engine light never goes off 5. Emission canister always go bad. 6. poor mileage. 19 on highway I can get it from a good SUV A waste of money. I have already spent over $1500 in repairs

Excellent longevity - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By Gwen - October 31 - 7:27 pmMy Hyundai has approximately 243xxx miles on it. All weve done is change the timing and drive belts every 100K miles, changed the oil every 3-4K miles, tune ups, brakes and tires. The only problems weve had was a leak in the driver door (covered by warranty), repeated replacement of windshield (some design flaw with the mirror embedded in the glass), and now, with its age, its leaking (not burning) about a quart of oil every 2-3 weeks. Overall I am exceptionally pleased with our purchase. Oh, the 5 speed manual is getting between 33 and 38 mpg driven mostly highway.

Not Bad for the Money - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By thornne - August 20 - 2:00 amId have to say overall I love the car. I have 30,000 miles on it, drive it very aggresively and havent had anything go wrong with it. Resale value sucks though. Gas mileage could be better, only average about 26 with a 5 spd, but I do drive aggressive. I think performance and handling are great for a car in this class.

Pay more for somthing else....... - 2001 Hyundai Elantra
By Pete - July 8 - 8:00 pm72 thousand miles and transmission will not shift. But not a transmission problem. Warranty is a crock. Hey Folks you pay for what you get. Also sun visors fell off, auto locks stopped, not to mention a dash light problem. The car is simply crap. Dont risk it. Pay 3 to 5 grand more for a good car.
