Bough the truck new 10 years ago. I have 77,000 miles on it and the only major repairs that I have done was a transmission (after only 35,000 miles) and recently the tie rod and stabilizer cracked. Good SUV, bad fuel economy. Now the little things are going, cruise control, rear wiper, rear defogger, gasket around rear window, keyless entry

I had to replace the engine head although there was coolant in the tank. Fuel economy is terrible. It now barely makes about 13 mpg.

I have had this car for 14 years bought it fro my granddaughter, she needed help! Ehis model was recalled when new because it had a tendency to catch on fire! never had a problem until I needed scheduled maintenance, AND when the transmission finally went out at 123,000 miles. I dont drive very much! A few years ago, I decided to change the spark plugs and couldnt get anyone except the dealer to do it, Very expensive! YOU or I can not get the back plugs out to replace on the V6 4 liter! When the trans. had problems the maintenance is so expensive I decided to replace it myself! It is called the exploder by the shops that work on them. Badly designed and the updates on the 5e55r transmission change the design and engineering to make up for the defects in the original design., original doesnt pump enough oil to lubricate correctly. (No such thing as a recall on this transmission) .Designed badly! The removal of the trans is practically impossible FROM THE BOTTOM for normal people because you must cut the exhaust system out because everything is welded together including the exhaust pipe bolts. (there is very little space to loosen anything) Aluminum engine with iron exhaust manifold is a serious problems, when you loosen bolts they could break easily inside the head! I did the job! and now I will sell because it is a maintenance problem in the future, planned obsolescence! even though beautiful, with a better heavy duty transmission NOW) it is too difficult to work on because of the way it was engineered and put together at the factory,Too complicated, badly designed and hard to fix. BUT , par for the course today.. When I was fixing this SUV I drove my 69 DART GT I HAVE had FOR 40 years! They dont make them like this old car anymore, The question is WHY ? The Explorer is functional and is attractive and comfortable but it is designed to be replaced, not designed to last a long time. These types of vehicles are forced on the people by EPA , I Believe , but all we want is something we can fix and that lasts! 4 wheel drive and automatic, if not necessary is simply in the way of maintenance in the future

Overall, a decent auto, however, the V8 seems to have a problem with broken ignition wires (as early as 30K-40K miles). Ford is not willing to acknowledge this problem, but has plenty of replacement wires in stock! Also problems with noisy front springs and the brake pedal. Poor quality of rear wiper, electric windows, luggage racks. Comfortable seats, decent interior layout, good comfort features (lighted mirrors, remote door locks, etc.).

  • I hate Ford. No more American cars. - 1999 Ford Explorer

This car was great until around 50,000 miles when the transmission started acting up. It surges between 2nd and 3rd gears. It still works with no repair but still surges. I can deal with that. But now at 65,000 miles I had to have the intake gasket replaced at a cool $1,000! I was even sort of ok with that but now the 4WD HIGH and LOW lights are flashing. I am sick of trouble codes with this SUV!!! I knew I shouldnt have given up my Camry. Why cant American car makers build a reliable car like the Japanese?

I bought this vehicle in Deceber 01. I was a single 28 yr old guy at the time and wanted something that I thought would be cool. I bought the Louisville made Explorer. I loved it. Still do for the most part. However my new wife has inherited it. Which is fine, she drives only 5 minutes to work and with the 17mpg it gets. I cant afford to pay 2 dollar gas. We still drive it when we go places. It has been very reliable for me. I know a lot of people have had some problems. If you dont drive it like a bat out of hell and change the oil it will be fine. Besides normal maintenance not had the 1st problem

Overall this has been a good car giving me the room and features I needed at a good price, however I hate the suspension which cant handle any hill or bump at an angle. Other issues have been rear wiper and radio LED which both work only occasionally.

Vehicle has had multiple problem with its front wheels. Have had to have several repairs with all of them being quite costly. I have had the vehicle to several Ford service centers, and have generally not been happy with service recieved. Fuel econmy is terrible, when I purchaced the vechile the window sticker siad aprox 20/MPG. The best I have ever recived was 15/MPG.

I was getting out of a 98 Mustang when I got this suv. It hasnt failed me except for once. I dont have too many complaints except for the drivers seat has broken, the rear windshield wiper doesnt work, and the middle console broke easily. It gets crappy gas mileage of about 14 city and 20 hgwy. I like my Explorer, but I dont love it.

  • No more Ford! - 1999 Ford Explorer

I purchased this vehicle brand new. Multiple recalls, a rear windshield wiper that NEVER worked, and just flat out bad Quality Control from the factory. First and last time I buy a Ford.
