  • Loved it, but hated transmission - 1991 Ford Explorer
    By -

Bought it used Oct 4,2001. Broke down December 24th (lovely christmas present) 2001. The transmission went out. Come to find out the dealership put a used transmission in it in September. We made them put in another transmission (used again) around the end of Jan 2002 and it also went out in about 120 days (after the 100 day warrenty expired) Now it sits and the finance company doesnt even want it back!! I was told that transmissions in Explorers go out all the time, exspecially before the put in the newer ones in 1994. Do I dare buy another?? I cant deciede. Good luck to anyone who buys under 1995.

  • exceeded my expectations - 1991 Ford Explorer

A forerunner in the fledgling SUV arena at the time and compared with present day technology and comfort, the 91Explorer is primitive in comparison to the multitude now available. I did not expect my Ford to last as long as it has. I have just rolled over 220,000 on the same engine and only had to replace the transmission - and that was because I never changed the transmission oil. My success in reaching over 200,000 miles in a Ford is due, I believe, to religiously changing the oil every 3,000 miles. I was so impressed with my Ford I have just purchased a 2001 Expedition. My Explorer was a great buy!

  • nothing but trouble - 1991 Ford Explorer

ever since I bought my 91 explorer Ive had nothing but headaches with it.first it was the fuel relay sensor that went then 2 brake lines, then the ignition shroud is shot and last but not least I had to replace the front end upper and lower ball joints and the tie rod arms.and just tonight it started making grinding noises in the front as i was turning a corner....what a piece of crap!

  • Decent SUV - 1991 Ford Explorer
    By -

Weve had this SUV for about 8 years. This is a decent looking truck, but have many costly repairs over the last 50k miles (currently 135k). Have had replace several components (4wd, and several other things under the hood. Also, this vehicle has rusted terribly along the running boards. One of the few positives is, although is parked outside every night, has always started on the first turn of the key.
