This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen eliminates the GLX trim level for wagons -- this means that those who prefer the VR6 engine to the 1.8T engine will have to stick with the sedan. As a consolation, GLS wagons equipped with the 1.8T are eligible for a premium package, which bundles traditional GLX content like power seats, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, wood interior trim and a trip computer. Additionally, VW has made the 1.8T available on both the GL sedan and wagon. GLs now have power windows and mirrors, cruise control and a CD player, while the GLS gets a standard sunroof and alloy wheels. All Jettas are available with stability control (ESP), heated seats and the Monsoon sound system. Other changes include a ULEV rating for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, redesigned cupholders and backlit buttons on the standard stereo head unit.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom.

  • Excellent, Fast, Reliable, Looks Great - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

As you can see, I have an 03 Jetta 1.8T Tiptronic 5-speed I bought with 28k...now has 91k 2.5 years later. Ive owned four late model Cadillacs (two DeVilles and two Eldorados). I was so disappointed in the Northstar V8 and the very cheap interior in all of them that I decided I would buy imported only now on. Boy, am I glad I did!!! First of all, the 1.8T is strong, reliable, FAST, and easy to work on and upgrade. The interior is sleek and leather is high quality and durable. Monsoon audio is awesome, but better with a subwoofer. The exterior is very sexy and stylish. The 17" wheels are great, especially with a good set of Z- rated performance tires. Too many good things to list.....

Im a new owner and looking forward to leaving an update in a few months. I have the leather (very nice) package with the Monsoon Sound, ESP, etc. Excellent acceleration and the handling is crisp.

great car to drive but very expensive to fix and not reliable

  • I had a bad experience - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

This was my first VW. I leased it for 3 years and cant wait to give it back. It took 5 trips to the dealership before they could figure out why the engine light kept coming on (bad fuel- injector sensors), I had a front bearing go, a broken front axle, and had the drivers seat heater shorted out with me in the seat. This will be my last VW.

  • Nice to drive - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

The interior and outerior of the car is perfect. Gives me a feeling of a luxery car. However, I think when it starts, the accleration is slow. It is powerful when it already at high speed, but at low speed it is even less powerful than a civic. I brought Turbo engine because I want it to run fast. But I alwasy feel powerless when begin to move.

  • Jetta - Disguised piece of junk - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

I notice a lot of these reviews are from people who have had their Jetta for a week or so and "just love them". Wait till youve had it for a year or so. Ill start from the top.. Ive had to have my mass air flow sensor replaced, my computer reprogrammed, catalayic converter replaced, window regulator replaced, "check engine" is on 5 out of 7 days a week, windows go up and down when you just want it to go up, stereo gets "cup sweat" on it and stops working, A/C is loud and doesnt cool even the driver, and its the most un-dent resistant material ever! Thank god for the lemon law...

  • Nice for Finances During Gas Craziness. - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

This is a fun car to drive with good fuel economy during bad fuel times. You have to watch for little things, like the gas and coolant caps, that can cause you some grief if not screwed on properly (Ive learned several calls later to my delearship, "this light came on..."). Overall I would say this is a very good car for the money and I feel safe and cool driving it.

  • Beautiful Nightmare - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

A black Jetta was my dream car. Thank god I leased it because at 200 miles the car began to fall apart. Brake light switch went twice in one week and the car would not get out of park, window dropped down in a snowstorm and after being replaced 3 times it still leaks, computer shorted out and the whole car went dead, sunroof leaks, CD player broke, transmission bucks and VW doesnt know what is wrong with it, factory tires were awful and the car would slide in a dusting of snow, and I made a left hand turn and the front axle broke. Dont but this car without a warranty because you will be livid when u pay the price for german parts!

  • Jetta TDI - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Great car if you drive a lot and dont want to pay a lot for fuel. Still performs well and is fun to drive.

  • You gotta go with Turbo yo! - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Must get turbo! Upgraded mine an a few other things. Although the good parts arent cheap, ya get what chall pay for. Make sure you have knowledge of the car or someone else does. So as long as its taken care of youll have one of the baddest rides on the road guaranteed!
