This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen eliminates the GLX trim level for wagons -- this means that those who prefer the VR6 engine to the 1.8T engine will have to stick with the sedan. As a consolation, GLS wagons equipped with the 1.8T are eligible for a premium package, which bundles traditional GLX content like power seats, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, wood interior trim and a trip computer. Additionally, VW has made the 1.8T available on both the GL sedan and wagon. GLs now have power windows and mirrors, cruise control and a CD player, while the GLS gets a standard sunroof and alloy wheels. All Jettas are available with stability control (ESP), heated seats and the Monsoon sound system. Other changes include a ULEV rating for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, redesigned cupholders and backlit buttons on the standard stereo head unit.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom.

  • Worst Car Ever - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

The VW Jetta TDI gets great mileage, but that is where the greatness ends. On the highway the ride is tolerable but around town it sounds and feels like I’m driving a “Big-Rig”.It gets louder the more I drive it. Not only is the motor loud, but when I’m stopped I can feel my entire body vibrate. At speeds from 0-40 there are rattles in the dash and all the windows squeak constantly. The dealer says this is all within the manufacturer’s specifications. Essentially no back seat. Cup holder location is ridiculous. Unless you live for 40-mpg stay away from this poorly engineered, poorly constructed automobile.

  • 2003 Jetta GL - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

I am very satisified with my 2003 Jetta GL since I purchased it in November. It is an awesome car packed with an overload of standard features. I love the modern color of platinum gray and the sleek exterior design. It is a car for both female and male. It is not too cute yet not masculine in style either. I love the sound system and comfort of the seats. The headrests in the back seat are great for extra travelers. The blue and red backlight is definately a great look. I loved the car so much my husband traded his current car in for Jetta too! So now they are the family car!

  • Fun Car But Problems Already! - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive had this car for about six months and Ive been loving every single moment while driving it... but unfortunately, Ive been hit with the notorious "second gear grind". Every time I shift into second gear, it sounds like metal hitting metal. I took the car to the dealer and they are replacing the syncros 1-2-3 under warranty. The dealer experience has been great since VW is trying to up their image. I havent gotten the car back yet, but I hope they fixed the problem. Cant wait to drive my baby again!

  • Great Performance and Reliability - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

This is a great car for a driving enthusiast that wants good gas mileage. It offers responsive performance, great handling, and a gutsy V6 engine. The six speed manual transmission adds an extra fun factor, and the sporty wheels and low profile tires add an aftermarket look. It is the most reliable car I have owned. In 63,000+ miles, have only had to replace a couple bulbs and perform regular service.

  • Impressive, but sad in some areas - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

11,000 mi and runs great. 49mpg even at 85mph. Most impressive feature is the engine. It will surprise you. Not a race car, but lots of torque no matter how many people or how much cargo. Great passing power on the highway even in 5th gear. More comfortable, better road feel and smoother overall drive than its competitors. Excellent commuter and touring car. Starts well even in cold weather. Very roomy up front, but lacks space for rear passengers. Strange cup holders, later 03 models have better ones. I will seriously consider purchasing another VW for my next vehicle.

  • Excellent all around car - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

This is my first new generation VW diesel. I have driven them in Europe, and decided to buy one in 12/02. I had to have the wagon since it is made in Germany and the sedan is Mexican. I drive about 100 mi/day commuting, and need the mileage. Despite what one of the other reviewers said, this car has been FAR more reliable than MY 88 VW. I sold my 88 VW w/ 135k on it, and it was good. This car has NEVER been in the shop for anything. DO use the DELVAC 1 oil. Insist that your dealer does if you have to take it to them. The oil costs more, but it truly is worth it. I get 42-52mpg, more in summer, less in winter. Car is NOT slow (have been > 110mph)

  • Fun to drive when not in the shop - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I purchased my Jetta with 5 miles and all options. After 5 years, it has about 30K miles (I dont drive much) and is often in the shop. If the engine light isnt on then its a recall. Its had electrical issues (interior dash lights no longer works), rear pillar rattling, suspension problems and the list goes on. Once off warranty, the repairs are very costly! Im not sure how some can rate this car with a 9 or 10 reliability. Perhaps I got the lemon. Its a fun car to drive but definitely my last VW.

  • Jetta 1.8T - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Just a lot of fun, we liked that we got more features then on most cars in this price range. Also the tiptronic is great, he gets the feel of a stick shift, I get the ease of an automatic.
