Overview & Reviews
Wolfsburg models are gone, and the Jetta GT arrives sporting the look of the GLX without the VR6 engine. Trek gets alloy wheels. GL, GLS, Trek and GT run more quietly, thanks to a new cylinder head design.
- Excellent road manners, roomy interior, fun-to-drive, heater will roast your face
- Some controls and symbols difficult to decipher, staid styling, underpowered four-cylinder engine

Fun to drive GLX vr6 - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By ssvk - March 9 - 10:00 amFrom the time i have owned this car, i have enjoyed driving it. It begs you to drive, push harder on the corners, it handles great. The engine is very peppy and responsive. All in all, its a very fun car, no major problems.

Fun German car - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By Mephistopholes - December 2 - 2:00 amI just bought this car a few months ago and all Ive really driven with it since then is long trips on the freeway. This car gets very very respectable gas milage for the freeway trips and its gearing is such that it has plenty of passing punch even in top gear at 70 MPH. Also this car is fun, it may be somewhat underpowered but it is certainly a car which wants to be hustled and loves the twisties. A+ German engineering in a resonable car.

Great Car! - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By lafayette_la_boy - November 12 - 2:00 amFUN FUN FUN! The VR6 is silky, fast, and reliable. It goes almost as much power as the BMW 325! But make sure you know someone that will be able to fix the car. It doesnt give much trouble, but the parts and VW mechanics seem to be few and far between if you live in a smaller town!

Reliable, Accurate handling, Economical! - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By mobiliare - November 1 - 10:00 amThis car is a great performer! I will never sell this car especially its my 1st car. I have put a ton of things (even a whole drumset in the trunk) and I have taken care of it really special: K&N filters, new imported brakes (not dealer brake) and its still running perfectly fine at 115000 miles. Its fast - I can beat anyone on highway and its slick looking. As long as you maintain it just right, its a very special car. GT is really rare - get one if you can!!

Typical Jetta - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By VerbalK - October 23 - 10:00 amI bought mine as a cert. preowned over two years ago. I just recently replaced the muffler and a wheel bearing.. my first repair since i got it (the dealer replaced a few sensors when I bought it to make it CPO). overall extremely reliable, great city car and feel solid on the highway. This is my second Jetta, and prolly wont be my last. So long as I stay in shape and dont require a typical big butt comfy interior, I should be happy with the sparse VW. Also, my first experiance with a CPO has been great. I thought it would be a rip off, but I think they really did make some key repairs AFTER I bought the car to make it more reliable. Kudos to the Cooley VW staff in East Greenbush NY

Best Car - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By Shorty - October 16 - 9:26 pmI bought my car about 5 months ago and nothing has gone wrong with it. My 97 Trek has Air Conditioning, Cruise Control, CD player (aftermarket), Power Sunroof, and Anti-Lock Brakes. The car is really fun to drive and I really like the manual transmision and clutch. The only thing I dont like is that there is a short little high pitched squeak when I first begin to open the sunroof and it lasts about one second.

1997 VW Jetta GL - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By KMP - July 21 - 5:30 amWe currently have 180K miles and no major problems other than the necessary and routine maintenance plus its FUN to drive! I understand some of the cars were put together in Mexico and others in Canada; ours was from Canada. We would definitely consider purchasing another VW when the time comes to replace this one (which wont be too long from now).

Jetta - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By Hank - July 17 - 11:23 pmI have owned this vehicle for over five years and have had no problems. This is my third VW and have been pleased with each. This is a fun vehicle to drive and it corners very well with minimal under steer. The heated cloth seats work great.
