Overview & Reviews
Wolfsburg models are gone, and the Jetta GT arrives sporting the look of the GLX without the VR6 engine. Trek gets alloy wheels. GL, GLS, Trek and GT run more quietly, thanks to a new cylinder head design.
- Excellent road manners, roomy interior, fun-to-drive, heater will roast your face
- Some controls and symbols difficult to decipher, staid styling, underpowered four-cylinder engine

Great overall car, maintenance is key to go 200k+ miles - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By vwguy84 - July 23 - 1:08 amI owned 2 VWs on the past, a 02 Jetta Wolfsburg, and 03 Gti , both 1.8t 5spds. I recently got rid of my newer truck to go back to No payments, and found a 1997 Jetta Gt black with black leather w/140k miles this past January. This car has been awesome, ive taken great care of her, since it was a 1 owner and interior is immaculate with no rips and paint looks new. mechanically car seems very sound, especially on the freeway, its very smooth. Ive had a few hiccups with car, such as gas gauge not always working or power door locks not working on driver side, but its expected with a older car. I plan to do a full overhaul and tune up to car in next 6 months, glad i finally own MK3 JETTA.

Somewhat disappointed - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By MJM - February 26 - 9:43 pmBought the car for my daughters. They hated it it. 1st VW Ive owned in 25 yrs. I expected more from the company. Just drove it 700 miles home and was surprised at how well it rode and drove at its age and mileage. *However* nothing else impressed me. The trunk is huge but that does not make up for the poor electrical design. Had to replace a taillight 4 times in 6 months. I know others who had the same problem I couldnt find a cupholder? Is that what that thing is called? The fuse box is in the most ridiculous place possible. You just cant get to it. Surprised that there is no gas cap cover interior lock. To me, the car is no big deal

My VR6 is AMAZING... - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By gh225345 - January 12 - 9:53 pmI really love this car. Ive had it for a little over a year now and it runs excellently. Ive had to replace a few minor things such as hoses and belts, clutch, and the trim started coming off but it was an easy fix with an adhesive tape that you can get from any auto parts store...its called molding tape. Ive put many high performance parts on my VW and it has 250 whp with no problems with the motor at all. I would highly recommend this vehicle. Just make sure you inspect it before you buy. My 1997.5 Jetta Vr6 has 111,982 miles on it and like I said before it runs great.

Not a good bet - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By Mackey - December 7 - 10:00 amI love my Jetta BUT...It is always broken. I have had it for 30000 miles and I have replaced almost the entire ignition, not at the same time, expensive seat bolts, the thermostat, the CO2 converters, headlights, various engine parts and fans, and the trunk light will NOT work. On the good side I have a chip in it and an intake. The result is a throaty powerful car that is very responsive and a blast to drive. Its a blast to drive if you have the car though, mine was in the shop so much it felt like it was there way more than it wasnt.

Low-reliability car. - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By babalooo - November 13 - 2:00 amVehicle has had numerous problems from a blown manual trans, to engine, drive train, emissions, problems, you name it. Pure crap car: poor engineering, poor materials, poor design, just plain poor overall. Everyone else I know that has a VW has the same problem. VW will not fix these know generic problems like trans seal, broken locks, etc. Never again!!!

97 GLX Reliability issues - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By Scrappy - October 20 - 10:00 amDoor alarm problem - car arms itself whenever the rear door is opened or that electric window is operated. Need 2 keys to get it started. Engine Sputters - Car sometimes hesitates and runs poorly for a few days then is fine for weeks at a time. Side door molding strips keep falling off. Buy some doublesided tape ahead of time. No big deal to fix. No place to put stuff. Ex: Cup hldr under ashtray so unusable for anything taller than soda. though. FIX ELECTRICAL PROBS! VWs notorious for this. Youd think theyd have solved by now.

1997 Volkswagen Jetta GT 2.0L - 1997 Volkswagen Jetta
By Sampman - May 30 - 2:00 amThe Jetta GT is an excellent car! I have never experienced any of the problems with the alarm or sunroof, and I use them a lot, especially since warm weather has come. As for performance, I dont see why people complain, if you run it out right, it will take anything. This is the perfect car for someone who is looking to be different, but also wants to customize it. I have already put on exhaust, K & N air filters, nice 18 Rims and tires, Eibach pro-kit 1.5". Personally I have had no problems other than comfort on long road trips, but this car isnt for grandma, is it?
