This Year's Model Updates:

Completely redesigned, the 2009 Toyota Corolla looks much the same as last year's model but is a bit larger inside and out. Highlights on the new car include an available 2.4-liter engine and a navigation system.

Pros:
  • Smooth and controlled ride, excellent fuel economy with base 1.8-liter engine, attractive and ergonomic interior design, lengthy features list.
Cons:
  • Oddly weighted electric-assist steering, so-so gas mileage with 2.4-liter engine.

  • Boring!!!!!!!!!!!! - 2009 Toyota Corolla

This is absolutely the most boring car Ive ever owned. Ive owned everything from sedans, to coupes, to convertibles, and trucks - this is the least inspiring car I could ever imagine to own. I drive a lot for work, and I just wanted something with good fuel economy and a reputation for reliability. I suppose it has that in spades, but thats all it has. In a practical sense, there is nothing wrong with the car. It does what its meant to do, but I hate driving this car. I cant wait until I get rid of it. The engine is lifeless, and the steering and handling are non-existent. Boring, boring, boring, boring!! I will probably never buy another Toyota, and would never buy a Lexus either.

  • Not bad, but could be much better! - 2009 Toyota Corolla

Its a good car but does not stand out in any way. Redesign the interior, clock in the radio area (add date/day of week); Improve steering feel; Illuminated controls for power door locks & mirrors; 8 way power driver’s seat w/ lumbar support; Radio backlighting should be blue to match other controls; Make the LCD bigger & higher resolution so it contains more info at a time, not force to toggle the TEXT button. Every cheap gadget these days offers high-res LCDs with a wealth of info! & get rid of the pixelated fonts; Make available fog lights on XLE. Heated outside mirrors standard on the XLE (Elantra offer them standard on all models); No intrusive hinges on trunk.

  • OK except wierd brake placement - 2009 Toyota Corolla

traded in an old SUV and got clunker discount on a new Corolla. Main problem with the Corolla is brake pedal engages way down near the floor where the accelerator pedal is. Easy to hit accelerator when trying to brake. Why does Toyota for 2009 decide to situate non-adjustable break point so low? Electronic steering becomes annoying after a while too. No real road feel as in a normal hydraulic steering system.

Im 6 foot tall and almost didnt buy because of its size, would have been a good decision. My knees are right on the steering wheel, nobody could sit behind me and the seat puts me at an akward posture. Its overly standardized; changed a back light and had no way to turn on or off the lights to check it until the car lets me at night. Why cant the human control the lights? Really dumb feature on a regular basis. Windshield wipers have 3 or 4 settings, thats it, no adjustable levels. Accelerates so slowly I might as well be on a 50cc scooter. Electronics suck; only shows track number on display, I dj so it helps if I can see the song titles to remember the song. The auxiliary is broken on my car so thats probably just my qualm but be careful, its delicate. Bought it at about 105000 miles, 09 in 15... owned it 5 months and Ive put 500 in repairs and will be taking it to the shop again this week. Not a mechanic but the front wheels suck. Friend of mine with virtually identical car had to replace whole transmission at just over 100000 miles. Gets great gas mileage but I would have paid for better quality as I thought this car would be more reliable ie less repairs, maintenance expected. Worst car Ive ever owned. Good thing it holds its value, anybody in the market for an oversized go cart?

This is my second toyota corolla and i have alway loved toyota and could not see myself buying anything else. Well this car has changed that opinion and my next car will not be a toyota. This 2009 has had the whole A/C replaces, cam shaft gear, starter and the car still has problems starting. My corolla only had 56,000 miles. Total cost of repairs under warranty is over $9,000…. beware of the 2009 year.

  • Not the Corolla it use to be - 2009 Toyota Corolla

I had noise in front suspension, dealer replaced both front struts and housing, Hubcap fell off for no reason, tire pressure sensor replaced, brakes recalled, glove box popped off for no reason, breaks still squeak, weird steering that when traveling over 55 MPH car will not stay put in a straight line

  • Have I bought a lemon? - 2009 Toyota Corolla

We purchased a 2009 Toyota Corolla LE May 31, 2008. At about 2000 miles the VSC Light came on flashing. Took it back to dealer and they could not find anything wrong. The light came back on and it started to spit and sputter and die for no reason around 3000 miles. Took it back to dealer and they replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor and cleared the codes again. Was driving it again and slowed down to turn a corner and it died for no reason. It currently has 4500 miles on it and the dealer has had it for a week. They called and said they are ordering a new wiring harness which is supposed to fix the problem. Im now wondering what will be next.

  • Just ok - 2009 Toyota Corolla

I didnt exactly buy a Toyota for performance, but for a cheap car with great reliability. My cars been fairly reliable, at least compared to German cars, but i was disappointed that ive already had to replace the alternator and water pump at 60,000+ and 76,000 miles respectively. Another thing that bugs me is that the front seat is not comfortable and makes my back ache. If i have enough resources in the future, i would avoid buying a toyota corolla.

noise in front suspension, dealer replaced both front struts and housing at 4500 miles. gas mileage great, steering is odd.I have owned 15 Toyotas before this one,car was too pricing for what you got on the vehicle, interior fabric and plastic could be better. Just hope this corolla last.

  • Pass this one by even if you are short! - 2009 Toyota Corolla

I bought this car for my business. I am over 6’ tall and it was a big mistake. After 20 or so miles it gets very uncomfortable for someone tall. It hurt my back so bad I traded it in after only 200 miles! Before you think that a short person would find this vehicle acceptable, please pay careful attention to the steering issue. You cannot hold a straight line especially on the freeway. This is clearly a design defect that needs to be fixed. Strongly suggest you check out Mazda or VW for a small car.
