This Year's Model Updates:

Completely redesigned, the 2009 Toyota Corolla looks much the same as last year's model but is a bit larger inside and out. Highlights on the new car include an available 2.4-liter engine and a navigation system.

Pros:
  • Smooth and controlled ride, excellent fuel economy with base 1.8-liter engine, attractive and ergonomic interior design, lengthy features list.
Cons:
  • Oddly weighted electric-assist steering, so-so gas mileage with 2.4-liter engine.

  • Excellent Econo Car! - 2009 Toyota Corolla

Purchased the car in September and already have over 1200 miles on it. Purchased it for the great gas millage and low price but I agree with other reviews that it is a very basic car and some of the features were poorly thought out like the center armrest and the clock. However for the money this is a great car. It takes some getting use to the electronic power steering but for a 1.8 liter engine there is lots of pep in this car. I am averaging 33.5 MPG so far and overall am pleased with the purchase. The best news was that the dealer was extremely anxious to deal on price – way better price then the TMZ price. In addition, the zero percent financing sealed the deal!

  • Sporty Looking Car with Economy Mileage - 2009 Toyota Corolla

I did a lot of research before getting this car. I traded a 98 Audi A6, and was skeptical to get into an economy car. I had looked at the 2008s last year and wasnt impressed; they look like peppy college cars. The redesigned S looks sporty and fun without the sports car problems. Another big selling point for me was the 6 standard airbags and ABS. In Colorado weather those things are a must-have. And most important, I nearly fell over when I saw the MPG I was getting! 37 combining city and highway driving! My Audi maxed at 22! Guess thats the trade from a V6 to a 4 cylinder, but the pros for this car definitely outweigh the cons.

  • Wish I stayed with Honda - 2009 Toyota Corolla

Disappointed after 7 months. Interior plastic trim is already breaking and seems to scuff easily. 2 major repairs (sunroof rattling & seat height adjustment would not hold). Seat is still not working correctly. Sound system not great. No rear dome light, no glove box light or lock, no lights on visor mirrors. Cloth upholstery is a dirt magnet (unless you buy Toyotas protection package). Wipers dont work when theres frost on the window, until the car warms up. I bought this to replace my gas guzzling Honda mini van. Corolla = about 30 MPG with mixed freeway and street driving which I consider very good. Wish Id stuck with Honda. Had looked at the Fit. More bang for the buck.

  • Is Toyota losing their touch? - 2009 Toyota Corolla

This is my second toyota and has come to be very disappointing. The build quality, cheap parts, and overall value of the car is terrible. My biggest issue is oil consumption. The car uses at least 1 quart of oil a week. The dealer says nothing is wrong. Other reviews online point out the same issue. My life now consists of weekly visits to an instant oil change place to get it topped off. Thank God it is free! Otherwise I would go bankrupt just buying oil to refill it with. The steering is awful at high speeds. I fear that Toyota is becoming the Japanese version of GM. I guess I will try my luck with Honda or maybe Ford if I am forced to find another vehicle.

Great JBL-6 disk w/XM stereo. Ride is controlled and solid, brakes are strong. Acceleration is pretty much the same as my old 2006 S. Car is VERY quiet on the road. Great gas mileage and great looks.

  • Should have kept looking - 2009 Toyota Corolla

We have a 2005 Corolla and have had great luck with it. Thats why we went with the 2009 Corolla. Having had the 2009 for 18 months now I can report that the 2009 is no 2005 Corolla. The seats are not as comfortable, the clock was removed from the radio and now you have to toogle through the odometer settings to see it. The plastic interior is cheap looking and the gas mileage barely breaks 30 mpg (as compared to our 05 which gets 35+). Overall this car is not in the same class as the previous generation. Very disappointed.

This is my second toyota corolla and i have alway loved toyota and could not see myself buying anything else. Well this car has changed that opinion and my next car will not be a toyota. This 2009 has had the whole A/C replaces, cam shaft gear, starter and the car still has problems starting. My corolla only had 56,000 miles. Total cost of repairs under warranty is over $9,000…. beware of the 2009 year.

  • The Best Choice - 2009 Toyota Corolla

I recently brought 2009 Corolla about 1 month ago, used to have 93 Corolla with 185k miles. I drive about 25 miles a day on highway. There arent any loud wind noises when driving 65mph, nor does the car shake.Great acceleration. I get about 36+ miles per gallon. I love the design and everything about it. Like everyone else said, the clock is in awkward space.

  • Not Bad.... Not Bad at all - 2009 Toyota Corolla

I just got the XRS 2.4L and this thing is a sweet little car and looks great in the Dark Grey Metallic. Ive been getting great gas milage and its easy on the wallet at the pump. Its no slouch when I get on it and I feel totally comfortable with the handling and ride of the car. The JBL stereo system with XM is also a nice touch. I cant wait for the aftermarket stuff to come out for this car, hopefully TRD doesnt short change us on that. Overall I love the car so far and I hope that it keeps the Toyota reliability in good faith.
