This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Sonata receives a new look, a refined suspension and an available automanual transmission. The standard features list is lengthened to include such niceties as remote keyless entry and, on GLS and new-for-2002 LX models, 16-inch wheels. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Sonata's 2.4-liter four-cylinder is now rated for 138 hp, while the V6 is now at 170, the previously advertised 2002 power upgrade (11 horsepower) apparently notwithstanding. To compensate, the company is offering owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Excellent warranty, stylish sheetmetal, lots of bang for your family-sedan buck.
Cons:
  • Noisy four-cylinder engine, some cheap interior bits.

We were looking for a new car for winter driving b/c we also own a 2001 BMW. Test drive Hondas, Toyotas, Mazda. For a comparably equipped Japanese car wed have to pay more. Never thought about a Huyndai. Almost bought a Protoge until seeing the Sonata in the dealers lot. One test drive and we were sold. The car has been flawless. I am extremely glad I got this car.

I have the V6 & PWR moonroof options. The car looks great and rides nice, the V6 gives it excellent speed and makes merging easy. The windshield defroster is a little slow but the AC is great. The fold down rear seats are a great addition. I would recomend the Auto. but I would stick with the 6 cyl.

I was extremely pleased with the performance of this vehicle. I just traded it in on a 2007 model. This car was quite possibly one of the best cars Ive ever driven.

  • Great Car for the price - 2002 Hyundai Sonata

I have had this vehicle since October of last year. I get "double takes" because they either think it is a Jaguar or Mercedes, initially. I have a problem with the blower fan that draws on the engine, and makes a vibrating noise when put on 3rd setting (speed). Other than that, this car is awesome!

  • Excellent Value - 2002 Hyundai Sonata

This vehicle is an excellent value for the features it provides. It is stylish and comfortable to ride in. Handling is good and the engine develops plenty of power for accelleration and Interstate cruising. I tested VW Passat and Nissan Altima. Those are very nice vehicles, but cost far more for the features the Sonata LX offers. The 10/100,000 warranty eases any concern over long term reliability of this vehicle

WE LEASED TWO MAZDA 626 FOR 6 YEARES,TOOK A USED 626 01 FOR A TEST DRIVE,THEN TOOK A SONATA 4CY AND 6CY FOR TEST RIDE. WHAT A DIFFRENCE IN RIDE,EVEN 4CY WAS QUITE COMPARED TO 626,BETTER HANDILING ALL AROUND BETTER CAR. WIFE LOVES CAR, STILL BRAKING IN. AS FOR ABS BRAKES,I HAVE HAD TWO CARS WITH THEM AND I WOULD NEVER WOULD BUY A CAR WITH THEM! TAKE A TEST DRIVE AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK.

  • Hyundai has outdone Japan - 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Bought this used (1 yr old) from dealer (pgm car) with 11K miles. My wife and I have put 35K on is since, and this car has not needed to see the dealer since, with the exception of 1 recall. Other than regular maintenance, this car has needed nothing, and still looks and runs like new. The car has depreciated less than $3,000 in the 3 years weve owned it, and now Im shopping for one for my son. If you want a good, stylish, reliable and economic car, the Sonata should be your first choice.

  • Nothing but problems - 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Love the style, price, etc.But...Ive had nothing but problems- only had car for 6 wks. rotors had to be replaced- warped,$400+, multiple belt problems, vibration in steering wheel, interior handles cheaply made - caused cuts on hands, brakes not covered under warranty- pulley problem was causing belts to be replaced every 2 weeks.Took back to dealership 5 times within less than 5 months for high pitched noises in front end.The pulley was chewing the belts up.Problems with engine cutting out.Carfax check prior to purchase showed car was clean.Im reporting this under lemon law and trying to get another car, but because of amount owed will have negative equity in car. Very disappointed!

  • Best kept Secret - 2002 Hyundai Sonata
    By -

This midsize sedan is highly underrated due to the earlier history of Hyundai automobiles. Ive owned 2 Chevrolets, 2 Plymouths, 1 Rambler, 1 Dodge, 1 Mustang, 2 Pontiacs, 3 Buicks, 1 VW, and 3 Oldsmobiles. My company cars have included 4 Chevrolets, 2 Fords, and an Oldsmobile. My Hyundai Sonata LX V6 is as good or better than any of the new cars mentioned above, and at a fraction of the price. Sonata has been a well kept secret, but the cat is out of the bag. Like the ad says, "Drive it and youll buy it!"
