This Year's Model Updates:

Hyundai has added a GT sedan to the lineup. It has the same price and equipment as the GT hatchback, save for a rear wiper, and it gets a body-color rear spoiler. The hatchback will wear a black rear lip spoiler, and both GTs will come with floor mats. Meanwhile, the value-packed GLS sedan remains unchanged, except ABS will be slightly more affordable, as it has been added to the Accessory Group 3 options package, which costs $925. Finally, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Elantra is now rated at 135 hp, rather than 140, though the engine itself is unchanged.

Pros:
  • Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, plenty of standard features, ultralow price tag.
Cons:
  • Poor offset crash test score, ABS available only as a package option.

  • VERY GOOD CHOICE ! ! ! - 2003 Hyundai Elantra

I have bought my Elantra brand new for $13.800. I insisted on ABS (also came with cruise control and traction control) I worked as a "valet" so i was test driving all kinds of vehicles, but between corolla and civic, i liked elantra better. 10yr and 100,000 miles was a plus. only problem i had with the car is fuel tank. a wall inside the tank was loose, and was making noise. Hyundai dealer changed the tank under the warranty. the engine is not so fuel efficient. the most mpg i got is around 29mpg on a highway (but car was fully loaded, driven 75mph+) but in the city i dont know where the gas is going. i refuel, and few days - boom - gas is not there (trip less than 150- 200 miles(14.5 gal!!))

I bought this car new in 2003. It is the base model GLS. It is not fancy, its only a 4.0 cylinder, but it is very reliable. It now has 105,000 miles and has not needed any major repairs and still running great! Im looking to get a new vehicle and after the experience with this one, Im thinking it will be another Hyundai. My husband bought a 2001 Ford Taurus in 2003, when I got my Hyundai and has had all types of problems with it.

Finally a small car that is a blast to drive. This car (2003 Elantra GT 5 spd) bridges the gap between $20,000 plus smal sport car and value oriented customers. We purchased the car below Edmunds TMV price. The car is loaded. We couldnt be happier. We dont feel like we had to settle to get a car in the price range we were looking for. We feel like we got a better value than we were looking for.

  • Problem-free at 100k - 2003 Hyundai Elantra

Purchased for $6900 with 35k miles on it. Good condition. Manual. Handled well, peppy for an economy car. I have only had the following problems: A leaking radiator hose Suspension squeaks and creaks I get regular oil changes, replaced the timing belt at 90k miles and had it tuned up, and have replaced the tires once. Very low maintenance costs overall. At this point, the performance is suffering a little (diminished torque at high rpms), but Ive driven this car hard for about 70k miles now. Still extremely reliable, and I wouldnt think twice about driving it cross country. I had a 99 Elantra before, and my friend is still driving it in San Diego at over 160k miles.

  • Great car for my daughter - 2003 Hyundai Elantra

Purchased car for my daughter with 61,000 miles. Car now has 138,00 miles and going strong. Car is dependable beyond expectations. Only routine maintenance has been done on car. Car is comfortable to drive with good acceleration for a 4 cylinder. Good gas mileage.

  • some problems, but a good car for the $$ - 2003 Hyundai Elantra

We purchased on a friends advice and for the waranty. Day after delivery, the a/c stopped working. The trunk hood needed to be adjusted (it was off center and leaked). Three weeks after delivery, a hose clamp in the engine broke & leaked antifreeze. Weve been into the service dept. three times in three weeks! The car *is* fun & very comfortable, but workmanship could be better. Waranty is a real selling point, esp. the extended bumper-to- bumper 100K mile, which we got...and they did offer a free oil change. Overall, were pleased, but tentative to reccomend b/c of workmanship issues.

  • You have to drive this car! - 2003 Hyundai Elantra

I test drove the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla before I drove the Hyundai Elantra GT 4-dr hatchback. I bought my Elantra in May 2003 and I still love it. The car drives great, feels solid, and has more standard features than the Civic or Corolla. If you are looking for a car in this class you MUST drive this car!

    Absolute Great Buy. No Qualms.

  • Few repairs after five years - 2003 Hyundai Elantra
    By -

Originally, it cost $14,000...it now has over 87,000 miles, with only minor repairs. Original battery lasted me to the 80,000 mile point. The windshield got a crack from a thrown up rock on the highway at about the 60,000 mile point. Now, at my last inspection, the brakes barely passed, and Ill need to have them worked on soon, but not bad for this age and mileage. I would buy another of this model.
