Pros:
  • Honda quality, optional full-time all-wheel drive, spacious interior.
Cons:
  • The engine is a bit weak for such a large vehicle, and the front seat passenger gets only one armrest.

  • Great car - 1998 Honda CR-V

This is an exceptionally versatile car. I have the economy 4WD, so the comfort level is utilitarian, but thats all I wanted, really. This is the car I use for DYI projects and going back and forth to work. The 4 cyl engine is perky, but weak on the steep hills, but the mileage (22/city) makes up for it. It is the only SUV with a wheelbase that actually looks stable.

Not a luxury car, of course, but nice if youre looking for great reliability and some additional cargo room... without guzzling tons of gas.

  • I love it! - 1998 Honda CR-V

My husband calls this (affectionately) the "gutless wonder." It is underpowered but on my 110-mile commute on hilly, country roads, I dont have a chance to pass anyone! It handles superbly. The reliability is fantastic. The only car I have ever owned with 0 defects on purchase. It still has no mechanical problems. Ive been in two fender benders (including hitting a mule at 35+ mph) but no structual damage. I wont swap it for my husbands 2002 CRV!

The CRV is not a true off road rig. But as a winter vehicle for northern climes, it cant be beat. Fairly godd AWD. Adequate power. Always starts in below 30 temperatures. Good visibility and above average handling in slippery conditions. I really like it. Last vehicle was an AWD Ford Aerostar van.

  • My first Honda product - 1998 Honda CR-V

This is my first Honda, it has 110,000 miles on it. Overall it exudes quality. Dependability and reliability seem to be its genetics. There are some downsides to it, but because of the many sterling other qualities, I can easily overlook those poor ones. First the seats are abysmal-they are the worst feature in the entire package. Second the engine is way too noisy, third, the transmission shifts weird and is unacceptable, but bulletproof I am sure. As for driveability and repairs. Love it, no problems, probably wont be any. I would buy another, hopefully the seats are right and transmission and engine are smoother and quieter in future models.

great reliable, good on gas, needs more power, not very much pick up.. brakes could be better

  • Hondas are super-reliable! - 1998 Honda CR-V

Excellent handling and comfort. I wish the interior were quieter at highway speeds (mostly wind noise from side mirrors and roof-rack, some engine noise). Next model year (1999) has 20 more horsepower than 1998, so mines not as peppy as it could be. 20-24mpg seems low - even for an SUV. Much more passenger elbow-room and leg-room than Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Outback. In general, a quality, fun, roomy vehicle.

  • Tom on the CRV - 1998 Honda CR-V

The CRV was our first SUV and Honda experience. As far as this class goes, the CRV is exemplary in that it combines much of the best of both world: car-like manners and comfort with enough off-road capabilities for most camping and hiking trips. (Note that it emphatically will not do the Paris to Dakkar rally...) Reliability and build quality are wonderful. With 60k miles, the car has required two non-routine maintainence repairs: a loose gasket on the rear license plate holder and a rear diff oil change. The car still has the original brakes and needed only one set of tires. Not a rattle or squeak to be heard.

Biggest factor was the lack of power and the "dreaded" overdrive kick in to go over the smallest of hills. Even worst with a load. But with some modifications all is well. Replaced intake with performance tube, performance wires and plugs, added with a Tuner muffler, we have good power and sound. I would have to go after performance chips for engine and gas flow next followed by header with better piping.

My Crv has been nothing but trliable in the four years I have owned it. It Has taken me and my family on many trips to the Rockie mountains. I read the review of the last guy who reported transmission problems and i believe he may have got a very rare lemon. I see nothing but honda quality in my crv. I have never had to do any unscheduled repairs and it still runs smooth and great.
